Self-printed colour-illustrated softcovers, Ukiyo-e woodblock print of one of “restful scene on the ancient Tokaido Highway” by Hiroshige (minor rubbing, slight creasing at lower corner, from the library of Archibald Angus MacDonald (1892-1977), stepson of famed southern California oil man, William F. Byrne, as well as oil company, and drilling equipment owner and manager of MacDonald & Burns Oil Producers. First edition, thus of this nicely illustrated souvenir menu for the Nippon Yusen Kaisha Ocean Liner M.S. Asama Maru, during her voyage to Japan & China April, 1937. The Asama Maru, was one of the three premier N.Y.K. line sister ships, completed originally in Sept., 1929, and the menu dishes range from Supremem Chicken Halibut Sarah to the Japanese dish, Makunouchi & Osuimono [bento box]. Self-printed colour-illustrated softcovers, stylized Art Deco cover art of Mt. Fuji in gilt on blue field, w/ seagulls above (minor shelfwear), still VG copy, from the library of Archibald Angus MacDonald (1892-1977), stepson of famed southern California oil man, William F. Byrne, as well as oil company, and drilling equipment owner and manager of MacDonald & Burns Oil Producers. First edition, thus of this nicely illustrated travel brochure for the Nippon Yusen Kaisha Ocean Liner M.S. Asama Maru, sailing from Yokahama May 20, 1937, and reaching San Francisco June 2, 1937. The Asama Maru, was one of the three premier N.Y.K. line sister ships, completed originally in Sept., 1929, and following this voyage in 1937, would run aground near Hong Kong during a Typhoon.

One large 6-panel dissected colour linen-backed map, featuring one hemisphere map of Pacific Ocean 34 inches in diameter, within larger 40 x 52 in. colour-printed wall map, with scale at Equator of 1:23,300,000, folding down to 19.5 x 17.25, brass grommets mounted for hanging at upper fore-edge (minor edgewear, rubbing at crease folds, minor age toning, light fraying to the linen), still VG copy. Second printing of this scarce linen-backed dissected wall map reflecting the extent of Imperialist Colonial spheres of influence in the Pacific just 10 years before the outbreak of World War II. These educational maps served as key instructional tools for detailing Japanese, British, Dutch, French, Portuguese, and U.S. colonies, dependencies, and mandated territories demarcated here in respective colours, spanning from Asia to the Americas, and include British holdings in Antarctica. First edition, thus, of this anthology of morality tales and Odd Fellows literature.

[6], 184 pp. Tan-illustrated cloth, blue & brown lettering on spine (minor shelfwear, slight bumping to couple corners), w/ d.j. wraparound cover art by Evaline Ness (1911-1986) who would win the Caldecott in 1967 for Sam, Bangs and Moonshine, Newbery Medal label affixed front cover (minor edgewear, light dustsoiling, minor bumping to couple corners, price-clipped, minor toning to spine), still VG/VG copy. Eighth printing of this Newbery Medal winner, set against the backdrop of a California Native-American woman surviving on San Nicolas Island alone for 18 years after her people and sea otters are destroyed by Russian fur traders. O’Dell based the story on the life of a woman referred to as the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island, brought to the southern California mainland in 1853, baptized as Juana Maria, and buried later at Mission Santa Barbara.

This Irish suspense novel is set in 1920s Dublin after the Irish Civil War, and won the 1925 James Tait Black Memorial Prize.

Cist (1792-1868), founded the Western Weekly Advertiser journal in 1843, which later became Cist’s Weekly Advertiser.
