Contains 15 short stories by the Irish writer, whose career migrated from the directorship of the Abbey Theatre to a professorship at Stanford. His short story "Guests of the Nation" inspired, in part, the screenplay for "The Crying Game." Several of his short stories were published in the New Yorker. This is a large folio volume in an Ogawa series published with uniform covers. While other titles appear on the open market, "Chrysanthemums of Japan" is scarce; auction records indicate only one sale in the last few years, in England. The publication provides a fascinating glimpse into Meiji-era Japan in which the traditional Japanese aesthetic is slightly Americanized. That tendency is most noticed in Ogawa's captions, imbued with Victoriana.
