Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1864. Paperback. 8vo. Self-cover. 8pp. Very good. Cover a tad soiled and age toned, else clean and attractive. Text of Naglee's September 27, 1864 letter to William D. Kelley. Pages 5-8 consist of "Second Chapter from the Secret History of the War," Naglee's October 6, 1864 letter to Kelley. Not in Monaghan, but just as cryptic bibliographically and clearly a variant of some sort. (Interestingly, Monaghan mentions "A Chapter from the Secret History of the War" and "First Chapter from the Secret History of the War" as variant titles -- but never any "Second Chapter.") Unusual. DORNBUSCH 51720 note (where a publication year of 1862 is mistakenly hazarded).

This British admiral served as aide-de-camp to King George V (1911-12) and retired as a vice admiral in 1918. ALS, 1p, 6½" X 8¼", La Croix, France, 25 October 1928. Addressed to "Sir" (noted American autograph collector Reverend Cornelius Greenway). Near fine. Writing from "Villa Torriano," the Italian-style the admiral had built the previous year near St. Tropez, Napier commends his correspondent for "your World War Memorial Building, & your effort to collect photographs of distinguished officers of the allied forces," but feels that "as I held no important command afloat during the war, my photograph would be out of place in such distinguished company...." This noted concert pianist performed nationally throughout the 1920s and '30s; her husband was General Edwin M. "Pa" Watson (1883-1945), close friend and assistant to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., 1925. Very good. Faint creasing near bottom, barely visible. Sepia-tone half-length portrait of Nash playing piano, nicely signed and inscribed by her in black ink at lower right to a Chicago music school founder: "To John Leiser -- / Sincere Greetings / Frances Nash / 1925." A fine image by noted photographer Herman Heyn (1866-1943), the noted German-born portrait photographer remembered for portraits of William Jennings Bryan, William Howard Taft and hundreds of Native American portraits, with his blind-embossed "Heyn / Omaha" imprint at lower right.
