Description:
Netherlands India : Royal Geographical Society of the Netherlands , 1938. 31 maps, several multisheet and multi-image, most on a Mercator's projection. This is the most comprehensive atlas of the island nation of Indonesia every issued, and this is the original 1938 production, not the later reprint. Many of the maps are color coded for various themes. Apparently, for various economical and political reasons, this atlas took many years to complete, and was almost not published. The intent was to make it larger and more detailed, but WWI interfered. Most of the material is presented in English, French, Nederlands and German. Plates deal with shipping, zoology, mining, agriculture, biology, vulcanology, meteorology and more, in tremendous detail. Description:
Paris: Chez L'Auteur (Ozanne; Rue St. Thomas du Louvre), 1762. Large 8vo, later vellum spine with cloth boards, complete with all 50 engraved, b&w, numbered plates (some are actually text, in French), plus the engraved title and dedication (Le Duc De Choiseui) pages. Endpapers intact, with very little browning and foxing, with heavy laid paper. There are some very small and uniformly spaced pinholes in the left margin, from the old threaded binding. Many of his original drawings are housed in Paris, at the Musee de la Marine, and the Cabinet des Dessins…
