Nathaniel Whitaker was an outspoken Presbyterian minister with a long and wide-ranging career. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1752. Between his ordination in 1755 and his death in 1795, Whitaker ministered to five different congregations. He was in Salem from 1769 to 1784, officiating in what was known as the Tabernacle church. Whitaker was an outspoken Whig, zealously supporting the cause of the colonists and during the Revolution he published several pamphlets on his political opinions. He also accompanied Reverend Samson Occom, an educated member of the Mohegan tribe to Scotland and England to raise funds for the establishment of an institution for the education and Christianization of the North American Indians. Description:
[Civil War] J. Newton Culver. Handwritten Fair Copy of Diary Entries. Company H, Eleventh New Hampshire Volunteers. 1862-1865. 20 pp. Very good. This is apparently a fair copy of entries of the original diary, perhaps to preserve it, as portions are described as illegible, blurred pencil writing. I can locate no other record of this diary. Appears to be period writing and paper. About 2900 words, with entries for some 85 days. Culver was twenty years old in August, 1862 when he enlisted as a musician. His service record is confirmed in the National Park Service records M548 Roll 3. Early after their enlistment the Regiment is rushed to Washington to protect the Capitol. The Eleventh took part in the battle of Fredericksburg. In November 1862 they march through Virginia: "November 19th. Took up our march at 7 A.M. in the rain. We went into camp about 2 P.M. opposite Fredericksburg, passing through Falmouth. The Rebels hold the other side of the river. Their troops are in sight. November 20th. Our… Read More
