Old fold lines, chip to one leaf from broken seal, but no loss of text, deaccession stamp from the Connecticut Hist. Society on last leaf. James Barry, from his residence on the Island of Tenerife, mentions that he had read that the war [with Napoleon] was on the verge of a peaceful settlement in July and August, according to the English papers he had seen. Title and contents leaf, 24 photogravures of scenes from the Holy Land, each captioned and signed by the photographer in brown ink and protected with a tissue guard. All of the scenes are from Palestine: David's Tower, the Mount of Olives, Jerusalem street scenes, Bethlehem, Mount Tabor, the outlet of the Jordan from the Sea of Galilee, and others. OCLC locates one copy of this issue (Towson) and five copies of an issue of 110 photogravures, also published in 1921, in a portfolio. Very good. Original gilt-stamped suede boards, tied. (#7754).

Laid into volume one is a two-page single-spaced typed letter, signed by Nasatir, 4 November 1954, dealing with the legitimacy of Le Raye's Journal (a few pencil marks through the text by the recipient). Very good. Original green cloth, gilt spine titles, illustrated dust jackets (partly faded, fore-edge split on volume one, other minor wear at the extremities). (8125).

(12), 344, (14, index, "numbered" A-N) pp. A discussion of the rights of every sovereign nation "to exercise exclusive jurisdiction within its own territory." Inscribed on the front endpaper "Avec mes compliments a / mon cher ami Andy Freeman / Phna (?) Nathabanja / 22 Apr. 27 / Bangkok, Siam." Small label on front pastedown: "Printed and Bound at the / Bangkok Daily Mail / [two lines of text in Thai]" within an ornamental border. Original dark green cloth (upper corners worn), gilt title and rules on spine. Endpapers with a little foxing, else very good.

Washington [TX]: National Register Office, 184[5]. Receipt, partly printed, completed in manuscript, 8 x 19 cm. The sum of $5 was received from C.S. Brown "in payment of the above account for Miles S. Bennet," and signed for by Miller & Cushney. Old fold lines, docketed on verso, very good. The Texas National Register was published at Washington-on-the-Brazos by Washington D. Miller and William H. Cushney beginning with an extra on December 4, 1844 and continuing through Oct. 9, 1845. It was considered a partisan newspaper favoring the policies of Sam Houston and Anson Jones. Miles Squier Bennet (1818-1903), son of Major Valentine Bennet, an early Texas pioneer, joined his father there in 1838. He settled in De Witt County, on land given to him by his father in 1841. He later served in Capt. Cook's regiment during the Civil War.

First edition thus (i.e., designed by Bruce Rogers), 1/419 copies (this #41). 12mo. xxxii, 160 pp. Title page printed in red and black, running title, some initial letters, and chapter tail-pieces printed in red. Originally printed in France in 1627, Naude's "advice" was translated by Evelyn in 1661. Very good. Original leather-backed marbled boards, spine (several scuff marks) with ornaments and title, publisher's slipcase with printed paper label on spine numbered "41" in ink. (10572).
