Single sheet, folded, 2 leaves. 2pp. of text, approx. 320 words, addressed on last integral leaf to John Stoughton, Esq., His Catholick Majesty's Consul Gen'l. for the State of Massachusetts, Boston, and sent by ship, via an acquaintance of Stoughton's, a Mr. Thaxter [or Thayher?]. Description:
Washington [TX]: National Register Office, 184[5]. Receipt, partly printed, completed in manuscript, 8 x 19 cm. The sum of $5 was received from C.S. Brown "in payment of the above account for Miles S. Bennet," and signed for by Miller & Cushney. Old fold lines, docketed on verso, very good. The Texas National Register was published at Washington-on-the-Brazos by Washington D. Miller and William H. Cushney beginning with an extra on December 4, 1844 and continuing through Oct. 9, 1845. It was considered a partisan newspaper favoring the policies of Sam Houston and Anson Jones. Miles Squier Bennet (1818-1903), son of Major Valentine Bennet, an early Texas pioneer, joined his father there in 1838. He settled in De Witt County, on land given to him by his father in 1841. He later served in Capt. Cook's regiment during the Civil War.
