This is a field guide to the birds of Yamanashi Prefecture, located in the Chubu region of the main island of Honshu in Japan. The text is in Japanese with a 2 page summary in English at the end. Latin names and common names in English appear at the top of the page for each bird described in Japanese. Inscribed by the first author, Nakamura, to ornithologist Oliver L. Austin (past Director of the Austin Ornithological Research Center in Wellfleet, Massachusetts and past Curator of Ornithology at the Florida Museum of Natural History), on the front endpaper.

The first three parts document a joint Japanese-Chinese paleontology project that investigated the late Cenozoic Leijahe Formation in Ligtai, Ganzu, China. Part 4 presents results of a joint Japanese-Chinese project to the Yuanmou hominid site in Yunnan, Southwest China. The papers are in Japanese and in English with summaries in Chinese. The papers in this volume were originally prepared for the Wenner Gren Foundation conference on the systematics of Old World monkeys held at Burg-Warternstein, Austria in 1969.
