The Lynching of Claude Neal. N.A.A.C.P: New York, 1934. 8.5" x 11" inches. 8 pages. Includes photographs of Claude Neal's body, a cabin like his mother's burned by the lynch mob, and a page full of news headlines promoting the lynching. Report issued and conducted by the N.A.A.C.P into the lynching of Claude Neal. Neal was a 23 year old African American farmhand arrested in Jackson County, Florida on October 19, 1934 for allegedly raping and killing Lola Cannady, a 19 year-old white woman. The evidence against Neal was circumstantial at best, not sufficient to prove him guilty of the crime. When news got out about his arrest, white lynch mobs gathered. Neal was moved to multiple jails including 100 miles from Jackson County to Alabama. A mob of around 100 white men from Jackson County broke in and took Neal back to Florida. The lynching was a publicized spectacle set to take place at the Cannady farm, but the crowd got restless, torturing and murdering Neal in secret before his body was dragged from a…

Pope Pius VII. Writ of Excommunication of the Authors, Executors, and Instigators of the Usurpation of Rome, and of the States belonging to the Holy See. London: Vogel & Schulze,1809. Size 9" x 6". 13 pages. Pamphlet written in French. Very scarce; in only 3 libraries (Yale, Cornell, Bibliotheque National de France) as per OCLC Worldcat at the time of this writing. After several years of escalating hostilities between the First French Empire and the Italian Papal States, Napoleon Bonaparte occupied Rome on 2 February,1808. Just two months later, the Emperor decreed that the papal territories of Urbino, Ancona, Macerata and Camerino were 'irrevocably' part of 'my kingdom in Italy'. And finally in the following year (May 1809), Napoleon published the decree annexing Rome to the Grand Empire. With the Pontiff's lands now seized, all that was left for the Pope was his spiritual domain and his palaces. In protest, the Pope issued this excommunication, a harsh condemnation that nevertheless somewhat…

The troop spent much of their time headquartered at the Culver Road Armory on Culver Road, with training at Pine Camp, the site of this album, which is modern day Fort Drum. This troop would make…

[African American, Civil Rights] A Statement on the Negro's Participation in National Defense from the Office of the National Urban League. 1940, New York. 4 page document. 8.5" x 11." This document, put out by the National Urban League, discusses how the exploitation of Black labor undermines America's position as a democratic nation. It argues that in order to alleviate job discrimination, the Civil Service should do away with photography and rely only on fingerprinting for identification of applicants. The National Urban League was founded in 1911 with the objective of furthering economic and social justice by providing assistance to African Americans. Their statement reads: "In the last analysis, the status of the Negro and of his inalienable rights are the final test of whether we can unflinchingly and conscientiously face the world in our claims to the right to defend true democracy as a living force and the 'American Way.'"
