London: J.W.Norie and Co, 1826 Printed for the author by J.J.Hadley, Cheltenham, vii,+ii, 262pp+erata housed in a modern hardback binding. "Since I came on shore, having no residence, I have passed the half of each year in wandering nearly sixteen thousand miles, have visited almost all the sea ports of England and Scotland, and held familiar coversation with the Seamen, without either begging the question, or permitting them to know who I was, or the object in view." Published in 1826 the authors investigation must have taken some years. After the cessation of hostilities with France and the down sizing of the fleet after 1815 the need for impressment became less 'pressing' and was abandoned informally. However the last law passed in 1835 re-affirmed the power to Impress and Impressment remained legal until 1900. These laws have never been repealed. A scarce item in the original.

Buckingham: Barracuda Books, 1983 Horncastle has been called the Gateway to the Wolds. It could equally be named the Gateway to the Fens. Amoungst its many historical attributes the Great August Horse Fair at Horncastle was claimed as early as 1814 to be 'absolutely the largest held in the British Dominions, and therefore in the world, for no other country has anything like it.' 176pp well illustrated in black and white.

London: Edward Stanford, 1894 vi, 119pp, folding map, plus 32pp of advertisements. Tear to one map fold. Pencil marginalia to lower end paper. Also with contemporary loose insert promtional leaflet for Chelttenham with a map of part of the Malvern Hills.

Nagasaki, 1918 The contents include a large pictorial selection of historical materials connected with occidental intercourse - oriental intercourse, works of art and maps of Nagasaki. Texts are in Japanese and English. The unpaginated pages are bound through with eyeletted cords and are faced on the spine with a decorative satinised cloth. The book is enclosed in a satin covered card portfolio secured with bones.

Nelson's signature during his last year in the Mediterranean, 1799-1800, included the title Duke of Bronte, given to him by the King of Naples after the recovery of his kingdom from the French in August 1799. 28pp plus covers illustrated in black and white.

New York: Alfred A Knopf, 1938 A nicely produced book, typeset in Caslon to a narrow measure with wide borders and printed on laid paper. It is interesting to note that the first copies of the Declaration of Independence and the first paper currency distributed to citizens of the new born nation were also set in Caslon. 228pp. Light blue cloth, spine browned.

New York: Alfred A Knopf, 1936 A well produced book set in Baskerville to a narrow measure with wide margins and printed on laid paper. 187pp. Green cloth, spine and top edges sunned.

London: M A Nattali, 1849 The Southern Coast of England, a picturesque, antiquarian and topographical description of the scenery, towns and ancient remains of that part of the coast. Illustrated with thirty five wngravings after Turner, Collins, Prout, Owen, Dewint and others. 324 gilt edged pages. Rebound in Mulbery cloth to match the original the decorative front cover of which has been remounted. New end papers. Index pages collated in reverse. Overall a nice clean copy with no foxing. Title page and one plate only of the thirty five has a frayed edge.

The volume includes a letter from Henry Downton, Hopton Rectory, 21st Dec.1882 addressed to Thomas Greenwood a previous owner of this book. 307pp with some neat cursive marginalia. Stamps to half title and end papers. Spine ends lightly rubbed. Random light foxing.

Three quarter calf with marbled boards, recently rebacked with original spine relaid.
