Nadenbousch at the Grand Central Hotel in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Colonel John Quincy Adams Nadenbousch owned the Hotel in which he was being feted, as well as a lumber yard, and the Martinsburg branch of the Hannis Distillery (based in Philadelphia). He pursued these activities following service in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. Prior to the war he had been instrumental in forming the Berkeley Border Militia, a pre-Civil War local militia. While the toasts contain a number of shout outs to the nation as a whole, and to the period of peace and relative prosperity in which this banquet took place, there is also a toast to "The Militia of West Virginia and her Nobel Volunteer Corps. An exposé, targeted to residents of rural districts, of narcotic agents in patent remedies and soft drinks, as well as the illicit trade in morphine and other drugs. Illustrations depict numerous commercially available (and perfectly legal) preparations containing morphine and coca-leaf extracts, Coca-Cola prominent among them (Coca Cola did not become entirely cocaine-free until 1929). The author, Lyman Frederick Kebler (1863-1955), was an American chemist, physician, and writer. He "administrated the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 and was involved with uncovering counterfeit drugs. His office managed all chemists whose task was to determine the boundary between drugs and food, for which different criteria were enforced. A charitable cookbook; an efficient collection of two hundred forty recipes, none attributed, with concise instructions and separately listed ingredients. Abigail Phelps Rusks serves as inaugural sally, described as "over a hundred years old." Quenelles of Fish merits notice. Some local allegiance surfaces (among the bakers): Massacoe Spice Cake, Roxbury Cake, Simsbury's Old Fashioned Loaf Cake, Simsbury Light Fruit Cake. Simsbury, in Hartford County, traces its official origins as a Colonial town to 1670. The Abigail Phelps Chapter, organized in 1893, was named for Abigail (Pettibone) Phelps Strong (1706-1787), the mother of three Revolutionary War military officers. Washington: The National War Garden Commission, 1918. Octavo-sized booklet, stapled in wrappers (23 x 15 cm.), 32 pages. Illustrated throughout with comics. FIRST EDITION. A work promoting domestic war gardens in the U.S. during World War I, using comics and humor to look at the lighter side of food shortages and gardening. Most of the work reprinted from other newspapers and magazines. The pamphlet was published by the National War Garden Commission, established by Charles Lathrop Pack prior to the US entrance into World War I. The commission hoped that the war garden would counter the negative effects of a large crop failure in 1916, as well as interruptions in shipping due to submarine warfare, and the loss of farm workers due to enlistment. Some light creasing, otherwise near fine.

An attractive promotional cookbook, with recipes for griddle cakes, biscuits, and breads, as one might expect, but also for Boston & Maine Railroad pie, "sick room" & invalid recipes, and quite a few recipes requiring no yeast at all. Pictorial sewn stiff paper wrapper in color (lithographed by L. Ottmann, New York); some light edgewear, small scuff at verso of the upper wrap and first page of text obscuring a few words, text age-toned. Good or better. [OCLC locates four copies].

This very large compendium of recipes gathered from around the world seeks to solve the problems of the modern housewife with the dishes and advice of professional hotel, restaurant, and even railroad chefs. "Dinners served to her husband's associates must compete successfully with the menus of the world's most noted hotels, restaurants, ocean liners and streamliners" (preface). The book is divided into three parts: the first offers "Chefs' Recipes Arranged by Courses of a Meal", the second, "International Recipes from Famous Chefs", and the third, "Homemakers' Recipes" (although Relishes appear earlier in the Courses section, they are indicated as having been supplied by homemakers). A compilation of toasts from the Midwest-American poet, journalist and humorist, Wilbur D. Nesbit. Nesbit published many books with Volland & Co. The Loving Cup contains the first printing of L. Frank Baum's poem 'Smile'. "It is no wonder that after-dinner speaking in America is of higher degree of excellence than that of any other land, when we find a host of prominent men and women who graciously drop their daily work long enough to write for us some bit of verse or prose that makes us either smile or sigh, but always goes to the heart." Oxidation mark from staple; small stain to final leaf. Handsomely illustrated stiff wrappers have a bit of edgewear; otherwise overall near fine.

"Money accruing from this sale of this is for the building of the Home for the Aged", states the title page. Recipes are not attributed, but there is an excellent two-page description of the "Work of the Association" with names of the officers of the society, and its goals. includes two tipped in recipes at the rear, Mushroom Soup, and Cheese Custard (which is labeled as a "West India Recipe" and there is a third recipe written on a blank, Baked Onions. A bit of foxing to a few pages, previous owner's name in pencil to a few pages, otherwise very good or better, in decorated, blue-gray cloth. Scarce. [OCLC locates four copies; not in Brown or Cook].

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, issued the same year as the London edition but lacking the subtitle, "The Story of a London Garden". Another in the long list of charming gardening books by Beverley Nichols. The entire book is given to the landscaping project Nichols undertook after buying a new house in Heathstead, outside London. ~ Publisher's tan cloth. The dust jacket is not price clipped, and not color faded at all. There is a closed tear to the top of the spine, and some other light wear to the corners, otherwise very good.

John Nicholson, Esq. (1765-1820) was from New York's Herkimer County, and he employs this guide to farming as type of patriotism for the still young nation. Text-block foxed throughout. In the original printer's binding, untrimmed; three quarter sugar paper over orange paper spine, titled and with decorative printed bands.
