Three letters from Lord Napier to American attorney James Mandeville Carlisle while Napier was British Minister to the United States in Washington, DC. Two of the letters seek the advice of Carlisle on behalf of Her Majesty's Government regarding individual maritime incidents:

(1) The letter dated 20 July 1858 at Washington concerns the seizure of the American brig "Panchita" by Her Britannic Majesty's ship "Sappho," on suspicion of the former being engaged in the African slave trade. The "Panchita" was seized some 50 miles up the Congo River, searched, and then returned to New York where she was handed over to authorities. The owners of the "Panchita" firmly denied the slave-trading charges and demanded the arrest of two British officers on board.<br… Read More

[Lakehurst?]: Clements, 1925. Framed. Approximately 10 3/4" x 37 3/4", sight 6 5/8" x 31 1/4. Near fine. Not examined out of frame.. Silver gelatin photograph. Uncommon original silver gelatin panoramic photograph of the Ohio crash of the U. S. Navy's first rigid airship, the USS Shenandoah. The Shenandoah encountered a severe storm over Ohio on the morning of September 3, 1925, the violent updraft of which quickly carried the ship to an altitude that ruptured her gas bags and resulted in turbulence that broke the ship into three pieces.

This photograph shows the aft section of the ship, in which 18 crewmen survived the crash. The Shenandoah was on her 57th flight, intended as a promotional visit to the Midwest from her home base at Lakehurst, New Jersey.

Lakehurst-based photographer Rell Sam Clements, known for his panoramic photographs, apparently captured this image a short time after the crash, as souvenir hunters would soon… Read More

There are a few vertical creases to the pamphlet, along with a shallow chip along top edge of front cover and some small minor chipping to lower fore corner. A few insignificant spots of foxing along with a semicircular tidemark at top inner corner of title page.. A sermon likely in response to the February 24, 1838 pistol duel between two members of the U.S. Congress, resulting in the death of newly elected Representative Jonathan Cilley of Maine. Cilley had taken to the House floor and made allegations of bribery against a newspaper editor, who in turn dispatched Representative William Graves of Kentucky to deliver a letter of unknown content to Cilley. Cilley's refusal of the letter was interpreted by Graves as an insult upon his honor, and he challenged Cilley to a duel. The two men and their seconds--also Members of the House--met on the Marlborough Pike in Prince… Read More

Description:
[Oneida]: (S.n.), 1850. First printing. Wrappers. Sixteenmo. 14 pages. Fine. Scarce pamphlet that cleverly harnesses the contemporaneous debate over slavery to attack the institution of marriage. Many of the Abolitionist arguments against slavery are here effectively turned against mid-19th century marriage.

The text is structured as a fictionalized dialogue between "Judge North," "Major South," and "Mr. Free Church."

The Oneida Community was a religious utopian commune founded by John Humphrey Noyes in 1848. The commune practiced free love and believed perfection was possible here on earth.
