From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. Chorley near, Manchester: J Wood, 1930. No Binding. Near Fine. [23x27cm] Large illustrative printing block apparently showing an American Civil War scene, with a cavalry man bearing the Texas Lone Star State flag in combat with a sabre-bearing horseman who is seen rearing above him, sword drawn to strike a mortal blow. The image is made up of bronze strips, about 4mm high; 'J Wood Bolton' is stamped on the side of the wooden block and several production numbers. Stylistically the block appears to date from the first half of the twentieth century. Near Fine 1930

Very Good. pp 578 A bound folio of 78 Acts of Parliament from the second session of the 1807 Parliament, including an Act 'preventing any dealing or trafficking in the buying or selling of Slaves within the Colony of Sierra Leone' which followed the act to abolish the slave trade earlier the same year. The book is bound in speckled calf with gilt decoration and red and black spine labels as was customary for bound volumes of parliamentary acts. Some rubbing to extremities and along the hinges, and on boards but the binding is sounds and about very good. Among much else there are acts of Parliament concerning the Kilmainham Hospital, Stamp Duty in Ireland, an Act allowing the British Museum to sell items from their collections and an Act for the better Government of the settlements of Fort George and Bombay in India. Paris: F Regnault, 1525. One of the earliest prophetic collections to be published in France in an undated edition from the 1520s which draws upon Savonarola and other writers. Quarter marbled paper covered boards over calf spine from 1799; ticket of 'Librairie Normande... Caen' on the first pastedown. The printed text is preceded by 4 manuscript pages which explains how the repairs to this volume were based on a copy in the library at Chartres. The book's owner sets out the provenance for this particular volume which came from 'la Bibliotheque de M. Beaucousin avocat a Parlement à Paris savant litterateur...' At the same time as the binding was restored and additional endpapers inserted the volume had a couple of paper repairs made to the first leaf with manuscript facsimile to parts of A1 and A2, old damp staining to the final few leaves: the Mirabilis Liber collates complete A1-O4. It appears to date from the 1950's when such risque song and dance shows were popular in the French capital. Starring Jean-Claude Rameau, France Millot, Christiane Jaquier and Jean Dany and le Ballet Des Naturistes the numbers include "Pour Seduire Les Hommes", "Dance Sauvages" and "Les Operas Comiques".
