Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Volume XLI, number 2. First edition. The author of this source seeks to determine the factors which are responsible for the conversion of individual Navajo to one or another religious sect. This source treats principally the activities of the Mormons, who are settled among the Navajos at Rimrock, and a less conspicuous but also influential sect which he designates 'Galilean.' Through the analysis of survey-sample results and of life-history materials, his interpretation of Navajo conversion experience rests largely upon psychological rather than sociological foundations. In India, caste groups ensure their durability in an era of multiculturalism by officially representing caste as cultural difference or ethnicity rather than as unequal descent-based relations. Challenging dominant social theories of caste, this book addresses questions of how caste survives the system that gave rise to it and adapts to new demands of capitalism and democracy.
Based on original fieldwork, the book shows how the terrain of culture captured by a new grammar of caste revitalizes castes as cultural communities so that the culture of a caste is produced, organized and naturalized in the process of transforming jati (fetishized blood and kinship) into samaj (fetishized culture). Castes are shown to not be homogenous cultural wholes but sites of hegemony where class, gender and hierarchy over-determine the meanings and materiality… Read More

First edition. The problem of the Chiapanec, a people whose principal seat was in the vicinity of Chiapa de Corzo but whose traditional Nicaraguan origin is seriously question, is one that requires for solution a combined historical and archaeological study. In the study of such an interesting problem, the available historical sources are only the base that motivates the search for knowledge,by reason of being inexact and extremely superficial, whereas archaeological research is the instrument that permits refining this knowledge, placing the facts within a temporal and spatial framework closer reality.
