London [105 Great Russell Street, WC1] 1972. A brief signed letter, written in black ink, nine lines in total including handwritten address and salutation, declining an offer to contribute material. Single sheet of writing paper (25 x 20cm), folded twice. Near fine, in a grey cloth folder with gilt lettering to spine. Letters from the Nobel Laureate are uncommon in commerce. This letter (dated November 10, 1972) was written the year after Naipaul had won the Booker Prize for his novel In A Free State.

An inexpensive and presentable copy of the first edition. Fridtjof Nansen; Zoological scientist; Polar Explorer; Norwegian Delegate- Société des Nations; and originator of 'Nansen passports' (for refugees), was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1922. Listed number 11 in National Geographic's 100 Greatest Adventure books.

Black tooling, gilt titles, and label in black morocco to spine. Raised bands. Binder's label to rear paste-down. Spotting, toning, and some chipping to leaves, especially the first and last few gatherings. A large stain spans the lower margins of pages 28-33. Various old glue stains and marks. Inscriptions in both pencil and ink throughout leaves, rarely interfering with the text. Half-title archivally restored, page of anonymous notes to verso. Edges toned. Leather lightly scuffed in places, two light pen marks to lower board. Still very good. John Moore Neligan was physician at the Charitable Infirmary in Dublin until around 1855. He wrote this opus in response to discovering there existed no outstanding pharmaceutical guidebooks for medical students. Dictionary of Irish Biography.
