London: Gollancz, 1963 THE ONLY HARDBACK EDITION ever issued of this classic collection by the author of A Canticle For Leibowitz. This is a little unusual, because the jacket is in better condition than the book itself. The near perfect unclipped jacket is bright and unfaded, and protected. But the hardback binding is a little shabby, though it is not detached, and the endpapers are not cracked, but they have the marks you get when someone has used sticky tape to secure the jajcket. Hence the book is graded as only very good. The jacket has no spine fade, no inscriptions, a fairly firm text block. First printing, of course. The Furnival Books - London, 1931 Worth buying for the introduction alone; but then, so is the story. The whole volume - binding, drawing, typography, and - of course - the WRITING is deserving capital letters. Not everyone will like it. It could be strong meat for some and strictly vegan for others. But this is a fascinating example of English language writing. Odd but charming and slightly weird. Certainly of continuing interest to anyone interested in non formulaic English literature. It is only a bit wonderful. So, with the fine introduction in mind and the caveats and the plaudits, this is certainly a refreshing book to read in our excluding times, for it certainly would get short shrift from the Woke bunch who decide what gets published today.
