Description:
Two vols. Small 8vo, orig. dark blue wrappers, orig. title slips, orig. stitching. [China]: n.d. but 1934. A facsimile edition of this collection of fiction in the huaben 話本 style. Sometimes translated simply as "vernacular short story," this form of Chinese narrative originated in the Song dynasty. Some scholars maintain that the stories originated as "prompt-books" for storytellers, but this theory has been disputed. Our book is the result of fortuitous discovery. In 1929, a Beijing publisher issued a series of huaben based on a Ming edition carrying the imprint Qingping shan tang 清平山堂. This imprint had been used by Ming publisher Hong Pian 洪楩 in the Jiajing period (1522-66). The reprinted huaben collection, however, was incomplete. Then, in 1933, Ma Lian, the editor of our book, was in his hometown of Ningbo preparing to return to Beijing. "One day, I by chance bought a bundle of incomplete books. Unexpectedly, when I was going through the material, I found Huishi zhimeng… Read More

Three vols. Small 8vo, cont. mottled sheep (some wear to ends of spines & corners, fore-edge of upper cover of Vol. III worn), spines gilt, brown & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: P. Fr. Didot jeune, 1777 [but probably 1778]. A pirated reprint of the authorised second edition of 1778, which was expanded to nearly twice the size of the first edition with an up-to-date account of chemistry and much new material. Although technical dictionaries had appeared earlier, this was the first attempt to cover the whole field of chemistry, pure and applied, in an encyclopedic manner. The introduction traces the progress of chemistry from its origins to the time of Stahl and Boerhaave. The book was an immediate success and it was several times reprinted and translated; it produced many imitators. There are substantial entries for glass and wine. Good set. ❧ Cole 867. D.S.B., VIII, pp. 618-624. Duveen p. 377. Neville, II, pp. 113-114-"Published without the index… Read More

Description:
4 vols. Small 8vo, 19th-cent. quarter green morocco & marbled boards. Paris: P. Fr. Didot jeune, 1778. Second "genuine" edition. "It is the genuine second edition as written by Macquer, whose name now appears on the title and whose reputation had by this time greatly increased. An important addition is the 168-page article on gas, a topic that was almost entirely new and had not been mentioned in the first edition...While the number of articles remains almost the same, the work is nearly twice as long owing to the inclusion of an up-to-date account of chemistry and much new material."-Neville, II, p. 113. Macquer also added a large index to this edition. Although designated the (genuine) second edition on the title-page, this is actually the fifth appearance in French of this important and influential dictionary. Upper margin trimmed a little close in places but a very good set. Without the errata leaves in Vols. 2-4, and the inserted leaf paginated *335-*336 in Vol. 4.… Read More

Description:
73; 60 folding leaves (pagination in Vol. II continued from Vol. I). Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (wrappers rather worn), orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers (frayed), new stitching. Kyoto: Hayashi Kuhei & Takemura Shinbei, 1699. First edition of this valuable bibliography of Chinese encyclopedias or lei-shu (classified books); this is an important guide to the corpus of lei-shu. The term "encyclopedia" is not used in the Western sense. Lei-shu "is the name given a genre of collectanea of literary and non-literary materials compiled in pre-modern Chinese history. Commonly translated 'encyclopedia,' lei-shu is more accurately rendered 'classified book,' from the categories of topic, genre, or rhyme that were typically used to organize the contents. Lei-shu are properly regarded as encyclopedias in that they were intended to encompass and present synoptically the total of either existing knowledge or a specified field of knowledge. However, they did so in a characteristically Chinese… Read More

Description:
Engraved frontis. viii, 47 pp. 8vo, later wrappers (title a little browned), uncut. London: Printed for W. Parker..., 1777. First edition of "an important milestone in the early literature of gas analysis...Magellan (1722-90), was an Augustinian prior who emigrated to England and Protestantism in 1764. Elected F.R.S. (1774), he published this account of his researches on gases, addressed to Joseph Priestley. The glass apparatus for impregnating water with fixed air (carbon dioxide) is described in detail. Newly improved by 'Mr. Parker,' the apparatus was superior to that used by Priestley and described by him in 1772. Carbon dioxide was prepared by dissolving marble (calcium carbonate) in dilute sulphuric acid. Magellan also describes three new types of eudiometer he had designed; these, and the apparatus for making carbonated waters, are illustrated in the frontispiece."-Neville, II, p. 125. Very nice copy, inscribed by Magellan at the head of the title-page: "Comte de Castelbourgh par L'Auteur."… Read More

Description:
Woodcut device on title & 17 folding engraved plates. 6 p.l., 570, xxii pp. Large 4to, cont. mottled sheep (a few minor scuff marks), spine nicely gilt, contrasting vellum lettering piece on spine. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1754. Third edition, greatly enlarged, of the first exhaustive treatise on the aurora borealis. Mairan attributed the phenomenon to an extension of the sun's atmosphere, which at times enveloped the earth and blended with our atmosphere. "Inquiry into the history and physics of the aurora borealis; the chapter on the relation between the aurora and the magnetic declination is of special interest."-Wheeler Gift Cat. 382. There are many references to Descartes, Newton, Cassini, and Euler. Mairan (1678-1771), while basically a Cartesian, did incorporate some Newtonian ideas in his theories. Description:
14 double-page & three single-page fine brush & color-wash illus. 21, 19, 20 folding leaves. Three parts in one vol. Large 8vo (270 x 188 mm.), orig. semi-stiff blue patterned wrappers, manuscript title label on upper cover, new stitching. [Japan]: copied by Mokuro Kimura in Tenpo era (1830-44). A very rare manuscript account of the two expeditions in 1808 and 1809 of Mamiya (1775-1844), hydraulic engineer, cartographer, and explorer, to survey Sakhalin Island (J: Kita Ezo or Karafuto), off the coast of Siberia. The "Todatsu kiko" is Mamiya's main Sakhalin travel narrative. During these journeys, Mamiya discovered that Sakhalin is separated from the mainland by a strait, crossed it, and visited eastern Siberia in 1809, returning to Japan via China. "Todatsu kiko," submitted by Mamiya to officials of the shogunate in March 1811, contains valuable geographical and ethnographic information, in which he describes many encounters with the Ainu, Orokko, Uilta, Nivkh, and Yakagir people.
