An illustration on p. 236 accompanies the text (showing a winged Roman or Etruscan spirit). The title page is printed in red and black and includes an engraved vignette. A history of Italian literature first published in Milan, 1807.

An old ownership or institutional stamp is present on the title page, the second leaf, leaf T5, and also on the colophon page. With 21 plates by Alfred Croquis including a fold-out frontispiece and an extra illustrated title. Pages are generally clean. Name is inscribed on front blank fly-leaf; withdrawn plate placed on inside front cover; library impress stamp in upper corner of title page and in corner of p. 55. Solidly bound in half red morocco with attractive gilt spine. All edges marbled. Some rubbing to extremities. Corner tips to the boards neatly patched. Francis Sylvester Mahony (1804-1866) - Irish priest and journalist who served as the Roman Correspondent for the London Daily News. He also wrote for Fraser's Magazine under the name Father Prout. The Reliques of Father Prout, an interesting collection of ballads, epigrams, satire and classical allusions etc. were first published in 1836 with 18 plates by Maclise. [See Allibone, p.1205].

Including large woodcut of British coat of arms opposite the title. Printed in English black letter. Re-backed preserving original calf boards; well rubbed; old burn mark or darkened area on front cover. The re-backing extends part way onto the original boards and blends nicely with the old leather; some spots of careful restoration are present on the board edges. A faded early shelf number is hand printed on the fore-edge. The interior is generally clean with occasional brief marginalia in an early hand. A name - "John Byeith" - is neatly written (in the same hand) near the upper edge of the title page. End sheets are renewed in marbled paper. Carefully sealed tear at the bottom of p. 277. The outer edge of some leaves show spots of wear. An interesting compilation of laws and private acts of the English Parliament. [ESTC R232104].

The title is printed in gilt on the front cover (upper left corner) along with a blind-stamped impression of a group of fairies. Top edge of the book block is gilt; the fore-edge and the bottom edge are deckled. Binding contains some rubbing and wear to the extremities; corners are a bit bumped and worn. Interior pages show age-toning and some bumping to the lower corner tips. A mild stress mark or a partial corner crease is present on page 15 - starting 3 quarters of the way down from the outer edge. A poem about fairies dancing by the moonlight on top of Mount Minsi in Delaware.

Bound in full period sheep with gilt spine; rubbing and wear to extremities; head cap and front hinge are neatly restored. Several worn spots on the spine are touched up and a few gilt lines are repaired. Interior contains light age-toning and some spots of foxing. Name plate present on inside front cover with name rubbed off. This book was first published in 1708. According to Upcott the author was a physician named Dr. Samuel Midgley, "who wrote it… while in Halifax jail for debt, where he died in 1695. His poverty prevented his printing it; and John Bentley (under whose name the volume is generally known), who was Clerk of Halifax Church, claimed the hounor of it after his death."
