Description:
Edinburgh: Thomsons Brothers, 1822. First edition. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with gilt to spine. Measuring 140 x 80mm and collating complete including frontis and publisher's catalogue to rear: vii, [1, blank], 199, [1, errata], 8, [1, blank]. A Near Fine copy with some scuffing to boards and joints, and small chip to foot of spine. Contemporary ownership inscription to front endpaper: "Margaret Jane Palliser. Dublin 1824." A scarce work of juvenile fiction aimed at young women, it is unrecorded in OCLC and Sadleir (though there is mention of a later 1824 "fourth edition" and an American edition from 1827). Simple on its surface, each new chapter of Harriet and Her Cousin unfolds a new layer of prejudice that all too commonly prevents young women from finding meaningful connections with each other. Raised in a rural religious household, young Harriet has a spiritual awakening that leaves her soul altered. More excited about the world and the people around her, and more capable of… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: Charles A. Dixon and Co, 1873. First edition. Near Fine. Original printed wraps, with stitching holding well. Small stamp of Andover Newton to top corner of front wrapper. Mild offsetting and toning to exterior, with top rear corner bent. 14 pages. Internally complete, clean and unmarked. The present argument for coeducation in the U.S. has become quite scarce, with no appearances in the modern auction record and no other copies on the market. Composed and presented by the President of Swarthmore College a decade after its foundation, the Address asserts the need for national access to coeducation, outlines its benefits both to women and the population at large, and strikes down counterarguments through the use of statistics from coeducational universities including Swarthmore and Oberlin College. While Magill posits that the burden of proof should fall on the detractors of women's education, he nonetheless uses Swarthmore and Oberlin's successes as evidence that women should not be… Read More

New York: Rinehart & Company, 1948. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A Nearly Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Slight wear to the spine ends; dust jacket price-clipped and toned along the edges. Very slight wear at the spine ends. Mailer's first novel, a masterful saga of the Second World War. Mailer wrote the novel while studying in Paris, and based much of it on his own experiences serving in the Pacific. The book was not only well reviewed but extremely popular - and spent over 60 weeks on the New York Times' bestseller list. It would also mark the beginning of an illustrious career for one of America's foremost authors. The Naked and the Dead appears on Modern Library's list of the 100 best English language novels of the 20th century. "...it bears witness to a new and significant talent among American novelists." (Contemporary New York Times review) Raoul Walsh directed the 1958 film of the same name starring Aldo Ray, Cliff Robertson and Raymond Massey. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Read More

London: J. M. Dent, 1894. First edition thus. Near Fine/Very Good. One of 1500 copies, complete in two volumes. Bound in full yellow cloth with elaborate gilt stamping to the front boards and spines. Retaining the very scarce original brown paper dust jackets. Books in Near Fine condition, some foxing to the cloth and the internal contents, but rarely seen when the cloth retains its natural color. Dust jackets both about Very Good, minor chipping to the spine ends and along the top of the rear panel to vol. 2. Vol. 2 also missing the lower half of the front flap. Interestingly, each book has an additional thin paper wrapper, between the printed jacket and the binding (as issued by the publisher). Unrestored 19th century dust jackets are uncommon. Malory translated and compiled the legends of Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, Guinevere, Sir Gawain, and the Knights of the Round Table, using numerous French and English sources. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Greene & Longman, 1833. First edition. Near Fine. Publisher's cloth binding retaining the delicate paper label to front board. Some bumping to corners and faint spotting to boards, but a pleasing, square copy in all. Internally a clean, with just a bit of scattered foxing to endpapers and preliminaries. Scarce on the market, this book documents Marcet's efforts to expand knowledge access to the working classes in order to make political self-advocacy possible. Presented by Marcet to Professor Pierre Prevost, the philosopher and physicist best known for his experiment on the body's radiation of heat as well as for his translation of Thomas Malthus' Essay on the Principles of Population; this copy bears his ownership signature on the front endpaper and an inscription from Marcet at the header of the title: "Prof. Prevost from the Author." "As the nineteenth century began, real property owned by a married woman in a legal estate was subject to the management and control of her husband. Personal property of the wife became the property of her husband as soon as he reduced it to possession. Where equity courts existed, separate equitable estated could be created for married women's property, but the protections provided to a wife by the equitable forum had to be specifically delineated in the document creating the estate" (Chused). London: Jennings, 1809. Early edition. Broadside measuring 250 x 360mm and printed in five columns to recto only. Deckled bottom edge. A Near Fine example with a bit of toning to edges and archival reinforcement to verso along central fold line. Scarce in any version, Bodleian Broadside Ballads records The Rakish Husband (or The Rakish Husband's Garland) across nine variants -- the present undocumented -- from 1757 to 1836. While the majority open "You gallant beaus of pleasure," the present opens "Come all you rakish husbands" (an opening present in only two recorded variants). While ESTC is unavailable at the time of cataloguing, OCLC reports only one existing copy of this variant (at the BL). No examples appear in the modern auction record, and the present is the only example in trade. The Rakish Husband speaks to turn of the century anxieties about the rising wealth and influence of London's demi-monde community. Casting successful sex workers as a danger to men's economic power, the broadside… Read More

Some chips along the top of the front panel and extremities of spine; rubbing to corners. Some shelfwear along the top of the rear panel. In all a pleasing copy. Living in a communal house in Brooklyn, Carson McCullers was exposed to a world almost too literary to be true. "Paul and Jane Bowles, Gypsy Rose Lee, W.H. Auden, and Benjamin Britten all slept at the house regularly. And it was during her time there, after a boozy Thanksgiving dinner, that the spark for her third novel, The Member of the Wedding, was lit.
