Description:
Meulan, A. Masson [for the author], 1887-1889. Two papers in two. 8vo (21.2 x 14.1 cm). 38 pp. [18; 20]. Original, uniform blind wrappers. In later yellow protective wrapper. = Two rarely seen contributions, by the French malacologist Jules François Mabille (1831-1904) to Vietnamese malacology, with the descriptions of many new species, mostly collected by the botanist and malacologist Gaspard Joseph Benedict "Benjamin" Balansa (1825-1891), curiously referred to as "Dom. Balansa" by Mabille. As Mabille was one of the first to study the Vietnamese malacofauna in-depth, many species are still valid today. The first paper is one of only 50 copies, as stated in note at the bottom of the last text leaf: ‘A cinquante exemplaires, ce 14 mai 1887’. The second paper seems to be just as rare. Stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front wrappers, otherwise very good, clean.

Haarlem, C. H. Bohn, 1779. 8vo (22.0 x 14.4 cm). Title page, [vi], 161 pp. Contemporary mottled boards, no spine cover. = This is an extremely rare work, which can be seen as an extra supplement to the famous Rösel van Rosenhof, De natuurlyke historie der insecten. The carefully produced Dutch expanded edition, published two years after the German version, titled Raupenkalender, oder Verzeichnis aller Monate in welchen die von Rösel und Kleemann beschriebene abgebildete Raupen nebst ihrem Futter zu finden sind. It differs, amongst other ways, by the addition of a useful list of fodder plants according to the system of Linnaeus. The preface is by Kleemann, as in the German edition. The death of Linnaeus is mentioned. Uncut. The boards are probably original (i.e., this copy is as published). Provenance: a small private owner's stamp, W. Warnsinck, Arnhem, in the top margin of the title page; otherwise unmarked. Willem Warnsick (1856-1923) was a Dutch ornithologist. A few gatherings… Read More
