Description:
New York: HarperCollins, 1999. 259 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On the eve of World War II, America's newest submarine plunged helplessly to the North Atlantic bottom during a test dive. Miraculously, thirty-three crew members survived. While their wives and girlfriends waited in nearly unbearable tension on shore, their ultimate fate would depend on one man. In this thrilling true narrative of terror, heroism and courage in the depths of a malevolent ocean, (the author) brings us in vivid detail a blow-by-blow account of the disaster and its uncertain outcome. The sub was the 'Squalus'. The man was a U.S. Navy officer, Charles 'Swede" Momsen, an extraordinary combination of visionary, scientist and man of action. Until his advent, it was accepted that if a submarine went down, her crew was doomed. But Momsen, in the face of an indifferent, often sneering naval bureaucracy, battling red tape and disbelieving naysayers every step of the way, risked his own life again and…

Toronto: Coles, 1973. 230 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "As a boy, R.G. MacBeth witnessed the struggle we now know as the Riel Rebellion. His account begins with the barring to the new Canadian governor of the highway between Fort Garry and the border on October 21, 1869, and ends with the triumphant return of the Winnipeg Light Infantry to Winnipeg in 1885. Written from 'notes made nightly at the camp-fire' while the author took part in the military campaign, the story is dramatic and authentic. However, there is more here than simply sources for the military or political historian. The book brings to life the drama of frontier days. The remarkable men who shaped the West walk again: Ambroise Lepine, Riel's huge lieutenant, 'the only…

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Belknap / Harvard University Press, 2019. 547 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "The impact of Walter Gropius can be measured in his buildings - Fagus Factory, Bauhaus Dessau, Pan Am - but no less in his students. I.M. Pei, Paul Rudolph, Anni Albers, Philip Johnson, Fumihiko Maki: countless masters were once disciples at the Bauhaus in Berlin and at Harvard. Between 1910 and 1930, Gropius was the center of European modernism, and avant-garde society glamor, only to be exiled to the antimodernist United Kingdom during the Nazi years. Later, under the democratizing influence of American universities, he became an advocate of public art and cemented a starring role in twentieth-century architecture and design. Fiona MacCarthy challenges the image of Gropius as a doctrinaire architectural rationalist, bringing out the visionary philosophy and courage that carried him through a politically hostile age. Pilloried by Tom Wolfe as inventor of the…

Boston: Twayne, 1988. 186 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "(T)he first full-length critical examination of this acclaimed author/illustrator's work. In her thoughtful, concise study, Ruth K. MacDonald argues that Dr. Seuss has earned his place as the most popular author/illustrator for children in America because of his unique ability to write stories of high quality while working within the restrictive format of the easy reader, a story told in simple words and sentences that maintains the interest of children just learning to read. MacDonald believes that Dr. Seuss's work, which has until now remained largely ignored as literature because of its mass appeal, not only celebrates the particularly American trait of individuality, but also challenges the limits and conventions of children's literature. In her chronological survey of his work and her investigation of his influence upon other authors and illustrators, MacDonald shows that it is his genius, not clever…

As the author explains in his introduction, 'this outer excursion was necessary for 'William Ward' and 'George Francis' could scarcely have endured the atmosphere of Comber Cove'. Mr. Wilson MacDonald has long been urged to publish these brilliant Comber Cove poems, which the late Bliss Carman described as 'the greatest satire since the days of Juvenal'." Edmonton: Institute of Applied Art, 1966. 192 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs.
