London. Adam and Charles Black. 1910. First Edition. Octavo (8 ½ x 6 ½). xii, 133 pp. plus publisher's advertisements. Color frontispiece showing thirteen flies dressed by Mr. Skues with each fly identified. With a two-page typed letter signed by Mr. Skues, dated February 13, 1940, addressed to Baird C. Foster of Merchantville, New Jersey, laid-in. Mr. Foster was a member of The Anglers’ Club of New York and a bamboo fly rod maker and he was a frequent correspondent with G. E. M. Skues. In the letter, Mr. Skues discusses bamboo fly rod construction and the correct dimensions of their hexagon construction ( he also enclosed a drawing showing Mr. Foster the precise measurements), and he mentions a fly pattern he sent to Preston Jennings to try. This book turned chalk stream fly fishing on its head - upstream and downstream nymph fishing techniques were held to be generally heretical at the time, still somewhat so today; however Mr. Skues methods are the best way to catch wary trout. Photo frontispiece showing Mr. Skues by river's edge. Eight black and white plates in all, some of which capture trout rising to insects. Laid-in is a typed letter signed by G. E. M. Skues addressed to Baird Foster of Merchantsville, New Jersey, dated 23 March 1939 on Mr. Skues’s law office stationery. A few spots of light foxing here and there in the text but a nice, bright book. Very good. The letter with old folds in near fine condition. . Signed by Author.

A three page holograph letter signed, written by George Edward MacKenzie Skues on August 21, 1940 and addressed to his friend and frequent American correspondent, Baird Foster of Merchantville, New Jersey. In the letter Mr. Skues describes fly patterns he has fished and his success with them or lack of it, and mentions that he mailed 16 of his nymphs to Mr. Foster (a lucky man!). He also credits Preston Jennings’s book, A Book of Trout Flies, published by The Derrydale Press and its fly patterns as likely to be effective on English chalk streams; but he also points out that Jennings’s leader formulas would not be satisfactory for his nymph fishing as they would induce too much drag on the fly. Mr. Skues’s letters are written in a small, cramped hand, and occasionally a few words can be difficult to read. G. E. M. Skues and his books on chalk stream trout fishing are without equal. Paul Schullery has chronicled him well: "Skues has been described not only as the father of nymph fishing, but ... Read more
