Tidelines from old staining through text, but a solid copy in an attractive new binding. Sabin 42925 (quoting from "Monthly Review"): "His work contains some observations which are the result of good sense and a great knowledge of mankind, yet amid these there are many things which betray the author's country and religious persuasion." HOWES M-5.

Selma, AL: (The compiler?), 1912. 8vo. 55 pp. Periodical extract concerning the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac affixed to the rear endpaper. Original gilt-stamped navy cloth,. Very good. (381). First edition. Jones commanded the Virginia (formerly the "Merrimac") in its battle with the "Monitor" and he later directed the arsenal at Selma, Alabama. Inscribed by the subject's son Roger Ap Catesby Jones to William C. Whittle who served as executive officer on the C.S.S. Shenandoah during the Civil War (his father, of the same name, served as Confederate flag officer). Not in Nevins, Dornbusch, or broadfoot. Rather widely held in institutional libraries (OCLC records 17 copies), but we are unaware of any other copy having been for sale; we first sold this copy more than 20 years ago and have recently reacquired it.

Contemporary 3/4 black calf, marbled boards, joints starting, head of spine chipped. A publication of the United States Bureau of Education, Chapters from the Report of the Commissioner of Education for 1897-98. Inscribed by the author to Lyman J. Gage, who served as Secretary of Treasury under McKinley.

Philadelphia: Thomas Kite, 1829. First American edition (first published London, 1827). 8vo. 219 pp. American Imprints 39356. Contemporary sheep (rubbed), leather spine label; text block foxed, some bug damage in margin of title page (not affecting text). Good solid copy.

Cambridge, MA: Privately printed for Charles B. Wood III, 2003. First edition, 1/50 copies printed at the Ascensius Press on hand-made paper (the deluxe edition). Tall 8vo. 60 pp. Illustrated, portrait, plates, folding map of the river. First separate publication, having previously appeared in MURRAY'S MAGAZINE in 1887. Green quarter-morocco and decorated green paper boards, gilt title on spine, untrimmed edges, by Gray Parrot, publisher's green board slipcase. Fine.

Boston: Thomas G. Bangs, No. 1, State Street, 1819. First American from the twenty-second London Edition." 20 cm. 35 pp. Sewn. Outer edges of title leaf chipped away, not affecting printing. Some staining and soiling. Though its states first American it is from a later edition. The first American printing of this title was 1769 and there were a number of 18th century American editions.

Albany, [NY]: Printed by Henry C. Southwick, 1815. First printing of Machiavelli in America. 8vo. 349 pp. Text complete. With five (of seven) folding tables (first with some loss), and a short section, "Some Anecdotes, Relating to the Life and Writings of Nicolas Machiavel, Collected from Various Authors." The internal title 'Hints Relative to Torpedo Warfare' by Fulton occupies pp. 323-49 with in text illustrations. Fulton died unexpectedly the same year. Recent binding, with simulated leather spine stamped in gilt with white paper boards. Foxing and browning to text block, lacking two tables as noted. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 35164. RINK 2144.

This magnificent library, assembled by several generations of De Rennes, now resides at the University of Georgia. Original green cloth (some discoloring in spots), gilt title on spine; some foxing and internal soiling, but a good solid copy.
