A charming early view of Amsterdam, Netherlands with ships in the foreground and the town in the background. Economic prosperity abounded during the 17th century coining it the "Golden Age" for Dutch culture. Much of this wealth stemmed from sea trade both within Europe and overseas in Africa, Asia and the Americas. The economic boom resulted in more canals being created around the city for the quick transportation of goods.

Copperplate engraving. This map was engraved by French cartographer/military engineer Alain Manesson Mallet. He was active in the mid to late 17th century. A bird's eye view of the city of Paris showing the Siene River, various " quartiers" and major public buildings such as the Louvre and the Tuilleries. The peripheries are farmland and forests.

Rebound, residue of an old bookplate on pastedown, title page darkened along margins, a few areas of waterstaining, small holes from the preface pages to pp. 16, on the whole quite good. An important work on the laws of the forest. An amusing little printed note (probably 19th c.) is bound in "Qui Librum abstuleris diris ne liber abito: Si mihi reddideris, mutuus alter erit.-If thou should'st steal this book, ill luck attend thee; But send it back and I'll another lend thee" Si vis scire cujus sit, Here behold it underwrit. A lovely steel engraved map of the Emerald isle with hand coloured vignettes of St. Patrick's Dublin, Round Tower, Wicklow, Ross Castle on the Lake of Killarney, the Holy Well and Limerick Castle. Published in Martin's "The Illustrated Atlas, And Modern History Of The World Geographical, Political, Commercial & Statistical", c. 1851.

Thick 8vo, full calf, upper cover detached, blindstamp and ink notation to titlepage, part 2 titlepage misbound, some staining along foredges, otherwise very good.. BMC, Vol 17, p. 172; For a similar map see the Samourka Map Collection #A9109 (cartouche is different). Mela was an early Roman geographer originally from Spain. He theorized that the world was divided into five parts, of which only two were habitable. The map is particularly odd showing an oversized Indian subcontinent and a much widened Africa. Below Africa is a very large land mass. Mela's De Situ Orbis was originally published in 1471 and saw many subsequent editions published.

Abrasion to lower c/f on neatline ,some oxidizaton to old colour but generally v. good Latin text verso. A good map of the southern Netherlands including Flanders. Rotterdam, Delft, Bergen,Breda and Antwerp are some of the larger cities noted.
