Cordially, Bill MacKinnon 5/23/08." Additionally signed by the editor on the title page. Exhaustively researched over three plus decades, this work is the first half of MacKinnon's work on the Utah War. Nice association copy.

San Francisco: Matson Navigation Lines, 1959. Bifolium [30.5 cm x 45.5 cm] printed in full-color. Nice condition. Near fine. Dinner menu from the S.S. Matsonia, while it was enroute from San Francisco to Honolulu on July 7, 1959, that features nice cover art by Louis Macouillard. The S.S. Matsonia was one of the four luxury liners in Matson's 'White Fleet', which were designed by William Francis Gibbs and also included SS Malolo, SS Mariposa and SS Lurline. Matsonia was identical to Mariposa and very similar to Lurline. Louis Macouillard (1913-1987) was an acclaimed watercolorist, known for his marine and travel themed work. He was a graduate of the Art Students League of New York and the California Guild of Arts and Crafts. "You hear a kindly, fuzzy haired Fijian roar with laughter as he plays a sharp game of cricket. A view of a team of horses pulling a large wagon with a second team and wagon behind in the distance. A former bicycle salesman, who picked up a camera, Sumner W. Matteson (1867-1920) spent the first decade of the twentieth century crisscrossing North America taking photographs. Primarily a photojournalist, Matteson charmed his way into other people's work places and social celebrations. He produced some of the earliest photographic essays on the changing American West.

Written by a non-Mormon historian, this work shows an objective yet sympathetic look at the spread of the Mormon Church in the Southwest. McGibbeny (1891-1970) was born in Philadelphia, and he spent his early years in the eastern U.S. He later moved west and attended the University of Arizona. He moved to Salt Lake City in the early 1930s and established himself as a photographer and writer on the Navajo and Hopi Indians, with some of his work appearing in ‘Arizona Highways'.
