1804 CHINA George Macartney Embassy Voyages Trade MAP Emperor Qianlong CHINESE

In 1793, George Macartney headed the first British diplomatic mission to China – The Macartney Embassy. This mission was established to set ports of trade between China and Britain and establish permanent relations between the two world powers. Unfortunately, the Chinese Emperor Qianlong did not see the need for trade with Britain. Details of the mission and voyage were published by Aeneas Anderson who reported on major details of the mission.

This work, entitled 'A Narrative of the British Embassy to China' was a highly desirable work throughout Britain in the late 18th-century. So popular in fact that abridged versions were published. One such edition was J.B.J. Breton's French edition "Voyage en Chine et Tartarie", published in Paris in 1804. This four-tome example includes an atlas tome which features 22 engravings, including map!

James MacGeoghegan was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and historian. His 'History of Ireland' was written in French and published at Parish in 1758. John Mitchel's 1868 'History of Ireland' professes to be merely a continuation of MacGeoghegan, though Mitchel is throughout much more of a partisan than MacGeoghegan.

This 1868 edition includes numerous full-page illustrations throughout including a color frontispiece! It is notable, not only for its impressive illustrations, but for the contents including
·
Treaty of Limerick
·
William II
·
Battle of Landen
·
Queen Anne
·
Influence of the English Parliament

Description:
1794 1ed Infernal Conference of DEMONS Occult Spiritual Warfare Baptist MacGowan
John MacGowan was an 18th-century Baptist minister who wrote a number of sometimes controversial, satirical works exploring religious and philosophical issues. In his best known work, "Infernal Conference," he used the device of a series of dialogues between various demons to explore a number of questions; primarily human responsibility versus demonic manipulation.
MacGowen raised a few hackles with the blunt way he mocked the faults of other Christians, and for the subtext that Satan and his minions played a far greater part in earthly affairs than most people believed.
This 1794 American edition was published in Worcester, Massachusetts.

1686 Witch Trials 1ed England Parliament Mackenzie Scotland English Queen Mary
'Bloody' George Mackenzie was a 17th-century Scottish lawyer who is remembered for his harsh treatment of Covenanters, witches, and criminals. As a member of the Scottish Parliament, Mackenzie published a collection of his own observations on the acts and laws established by numerous British royals including Queen Mary, Kings James I-VI, Charles I and Charles II.
Notably, the acts and discussions covered a wide variety of topics, as could be expected. It is, however, those that pertained to witches and witchcraft garnered the most attention. During the reign of Queen Mary, the 73rd act covered the practice of witchcraft, as well as consulting witches or foretelling the future – an act punishable by death!

1694 Macrobius Saturnalia Dream Scipio Occult Pagan Philosophy Astronomy Vellum

"Good laws are produced by bad actions."
– Macrobius, Saturnalia

Macrobius was a 5th-century Roman scholar known for his works of Platonism during the Middle Ages. His most well-known and remembered works are 'Somnium Sciponis', or 'Commentary on Cicero's Dream of Scipio' and 'Saturnalia' which is a collection of Roman religious anecdotes and historical sketches.

'Commentary on Dream of Scipio' was the most widely cited and referenced book in the Middle Ages. It is important for giving astronomical distances – one of the earliest estimations of the diameter of the sun. His anti-Christian approach to philosophy was evident in 'Dream' as he sought to describe Creation in a stoic pseudo-scientific manner. According to Shirley,
"His Neo-platonic commentary on Cicero includes, among many references to the pseudo-sciences, a geographic concept which is different from that of Ptolemy. The inhabited world north of the… Read More

Though, perhaps one of his most important works was history of the Iconoclast controversy from its earliest occurrences in 8th-century Byzantine disputes. 1686 FOLIOS Lutherans & Calvinism Maimbourg Huguenot Reformation Luther Calvin

Louis Maimbourg's "Histoire du Lutheranism". This first edition history of Martin Luther's theology and Lutheran doctrine summarizes Calvinism and Lutheranism in Europe from the year 1520 through 1680. This book also presents events in the history of the Protestant Reformation in France and papal oppositions. Because of Maimbourg's defense of the Gallican Church liberties, the Pope ordered him to leave the Jesuit society.

This set also contains Maimbourg's "History of Calvinism". This work of the history of Calvinism was received as major heresy among Protestants. It summarizes Calvinism and Lutheranism in Europe from the year 1520 through the Edict of Nantes in 1598 and presents events in the history of the Protestant Reformation in France and papal oppositions. Because of Maimbourg's defense of the Gallican Church liberties, the Pope ordered him to leave the Jesuit society.
