Paris: Editions Marcel Gasnier, 1945. Beautiful French children's book about a young sailor called Jean-Francois Popineau, his ostrich, and their adventures among the Moouri Tahitiens. Large slim quarto, original papered boards, vibrant colour photolithographic illustration throughout; front board moderately damp-stained, otherwise a very good copy, internally fine.

no date. Vibrant watercolour by British Australian illustrator, Peg Maltby (1899 - 1984). Peg Maltby, née Agnes Newberry Orchard, worked in England as an illustrator of chocolate-box lids before emigrating to Melbourne where she became a member of the Victorian Artists' Society holding successful exhibitions of her watercolours in the 1930s and 1940s. Maltby rose to fame with the publication of 'Peg's Fairy Book', published by Muffetts in 1944 and selling over 180,000 copies in five editions. The rare inclusion of a native koala in the composition gives this particular watercolour by Peg Maltby an important little place in Australian art history. Watercolour on paper, 310 mm x 220 mm, signed 'Peg Maltby' lower left-hand corner, framed.

Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1968. First published in 1920, this was the first monograph devoted to Conrad Martens. This revised and enlarged edition has been improved in numerous ways including a highly successful remaking of most of the coloured plates. Oblong quarto, brown cloth, 68 full page colour plates in colour, sepia and black & white, striking portrait frontispiece of Martens; small ink spot affects front board, a near-fine copy.

A most attractively-produced anthology of Australian and New Zealand stories and tales designed primarily for young people, highly evocative of its time. Authors include Rosa Praed, "Tasma", Mrs Patchett Martin, and Hume Nisbet. Illustrations are by H.J. Johnstone, T.J. Hughes, R. Carrick, Emily Harding, Marcella Walker and A.W. Wall. [Miller, p. 945; Muir, 4842; Wolff, 7857.]. Quarto, bound in original cloth-backed glazed pictorial boards, eight colour chromolithographic plates and other illustrations in the text, light scattered foxing, some edge-wear and rubbing but a very good copy.

Frederick McCubbin (1855-1917) was an Australian artist and an outstanding member of the Heidelberg School of Australian impressionism. A student of Eugen von Guerard, McCubbin's paintings remain iconic images of pioneer life in the wilderness. They were keystones in building a mythology relating the Australian landscape to national identity. Edition of 1000 copies, fully signed by McCubbin. Quarto, forty-five illustrations in colour and black and white (some are tipped plates with printed tissue guards); original gilt decorated cloth, a little rubbed, some preliminary foxing but still a lovely clean copy.
