(ca. 1855). A neatly written mid-nineteenth century manuscript notebook, dated 1855 on spine. The manuscript is an officer's notebook from the Royal Marine Artillery (RMA). The RMA was formed as a separate unit in 1804 to man the artillery in bomb vessels. The author was Edmund Charles McNaghten, his name is gilt embossed to the front cover and he has signed the manuscript E. C. MacNaghton RMA in pencil above several chapter headings. Report includes an account of the obstacles to its founding and events at its first meeting, at which William Lloyd Garrison was arrested. Also containing a letter from Lydia Maria Child. At the conclusion are several poems and hymns, including ones by Chapman and Bernard Barton. Maria Weston Chapman was a founding member of the Society, and was closely associated with Lucretia Mott, Lydia Maria Child and the New England abolitionists. Maupertuis, a French mathematician, philosopher and man of letters, was the Director of the Académie des Sciences, and the first President of the Prussian Academy of Science, at the invitation of Frederick the Great. This present dissertation "was written after an albino Negro appeared in Paris. A scientist, philosopher, and original thinker, Maupertuis was years ahead of his time in many aspects of biology, particularly embryology and genetics. His arguments against the then-prevailing theory of peformation and for epigenesis were so close to the idea of evolution that he is a true forerunner of Darwin and Mendel. Albert Dubout was French cartoonist, illustrator, painter, and sculptor, who was considered to be one of the great European satiric artists. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1953. The Albert Dubout Museum in Palavas-les-Flots, France is dedicated to his work. Code Géneral des Impots is a fine example of Dubout's humor, with his fabulous satirical drawings. Book and extra suite inserted in printed poster board folding sleeve, enclosed in printed poster board slipcase. Slipcase soiled, seam of bottom edge opened; front wrapper of book has been folded; interior of book clean, with bright illustrations; unopened.

Morris's A History of British Birds was first published in monthly parts from June 1850, over a period of 7 years. Each part contained 24 pages of letterpress and 4 hand-colored plates. It was a resounding success. The inspiration for the book came from the renowned English printer, Benjamin Fawcett, who approached Morris to write the text when Morris became Vicar of Nafferton.
