Description:
Orig. pub. Atlanta 1924. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2009. 200 pp., map Using all the early land grants and other records of the state, McLendon, who was secretary of state in Georgia at the time he wrote this book, put together a valuable study of Georgia's land disposition history dealing specifically with the lands acquired from the Creek and Cherokee Indians and the Georgia western lands in largely what is now Alabama and Mississippi. He discusses the headright and land lottery counties. Particular emphasis, however, is on the Yazoo Land Fraud, a massive fraud perpetrated by several Georgia governors and the state legislature from 1795-1803 by selling large tracts of land to insiders at absurdly low prices. Major companies involved in this were the Georgia Land Company, the Georgia Mississippi Company, the Upper Mississippi Company, and the Tennessee Company. Earlier companies involved were the South Carolina Yazoo Company, the Virginia Yazoo Company, and the Tennessee Yazoo Company.… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. Atlanta 1932. Reprinted 1978, 1988. Print on Demand Edition 2018. iv, 269 pp. + illus., new index Charlton County, Georgia, was formed by Legislative act in 1854 from a portion of Camden County, the most southern coastal area of Georgia. This volume has extensive treatment of the problems of the early settlers as they were caught under the pressure of the struggles among the British, Spanish, and the Indians over the territory. It is one of the rare books with some attention paid to the Spanish missions along the Georgia coast. The author's lurid narrative style makes this history one of the more engaging of its kind. His knowledge of the Okefenokee area and its people was extensive. A chapter is devoted to towns which have disappeared including Trader's Hill, the first seat of government in Charlton County. McQueen's eye was for both the relevant and entertaining aspects of history. His treatment of incidents from Indian massacres to the spectacle of "fist and skull" fights in the… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. New York 1857. Reprinted 1975. Print on Demand Edition 2011. viii, 9-330 pp. This is a collection of essays, largely historical, concerning Alabama and the old Southwest from the beginning of settlement to 1850. As the title indicates, Meek, a lawyer, newspaper editor, and politician, chose the more colorful incidents of Alabama history, but he vouches for the authenticity of the factual material presented. In general the events related pertain to Spanish and French exploration of the Southwest, British possession of the area, the Mexican War, and the Creek Indians. Included among the essays are ones describing the pilgrimage of DeSoto, the massacre at Fort Mims, the battle of Burnt Creek, General Sam Dale and the canoe fight, and biographies of William Weatherford (Red Eagle) and other Creek chieftains and warriors. These tales of adventures, battles, thrilling escapes, massacres, tragic love stories, heroes, and gallant deeds make this an interesting collection.
