Contemporary full red grained morocco, spine with gilt rules, lettering and embellishment. Boards with double gilt border rules, foliar and floral embellishment, edge tooling, inner foliar curlicues. All edges gilt, (gilding a little faded in places), green silk ribbon bookmark. Small area of surface loss to lower board (see photo). Corner tips lightly rubbed. Occasional light spotting, mainly to free endpapers. Text and plates crisp and bright.
Guy Toussaint Julien Carron (1760-1821) born in Rennes. Educator, writer and philanthropist who founded a number of social and educational institutions: schools, libraries and pharmacies while in exile in England. Deported to Jersey (1792-1796), on the Bourbon Restoration in 1814, Carron returned to France and became head of the Institut de Marie - Thérèse.

Title excised to upper margin, no loss of text. 17pp subscriber list including J Priestley, Wm Cullen and William Paley, with unnumbered page of subscribers not present in all copies. Toned throughout, with some spotting. Small ink stain to edges. Signature to title page. Barely legible note dated 1832, with the name Matthias Ferguson … "come Holy Spirit" loosely inserted: Ferguson marked neatly with pencil in subscribers list.

Miln's reconciliation of recent geological discoveries and scripture: the chapter "To build an Ark" carefully evaluates the practicalities. Paley's own work was published 8 years later.

Thoroughly revised, corrected and extended by Monceau in this second edition, in line with further researches, published a year after the first, with additional folding plate.

Whilst some copies of the first English edition incorporate the map from the French edition, some do not, and this copy still in an early binding shows no evidence of ever having included the map.
