A rare autograph. “Sir, If you will give insertion in your valuable columns to the enclosed Letter addressed to the King, you will confer a great obligation upon, Sir, your very obedient servant, Eliz Wright Macaulay.” Eliza Macauley (1785-1837), actress, Owenite, who came to notice as a socialist writer who campaigned on women's issues and financial reform. Owenism in the early 1830s promoted economic self-help of the working class through mutual co-operation. Working together to manufacture, trade, and create utopian–socialist and democratic communities. Women's equality was implicit in these plans. By 1832 she as the manager of the largest labour exchange where people bartered goods and services on the basis of the number of hours that was invested in them. William Bernard MacCabe (1801-91), Irish author, journalist on the Morning Chronicle, and historian, wrote A Catholic History of England, which appeared in three large volumes in 1847, 1849, and 1854.

13 Harley Street, Saturday 7 June, no year given. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition. Sir William MacCormac (1836 – 1901), surgeon. MacCormac was a strong advocate of the antiseptic surgical methods proposed by Joseph Lister and he served in conflicts such as the Boer War. An advocate and pioneer of the Royal Army Medical Corps, MacCormac was perhaps the most decorated surgeon in Britain and he served as Serjeant Surgeon to Edward VII

Temple, undated. 2 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, folds, in good condition. John Cameron MacDonald, engineer and later manager of The Times, became almoner to the Times Crimea Fund. On her arrival at Scutari, Florence Nightingale embarked on radical changes to the medical arrangements. The public funds were hedged with bureaucratic procedures, and she had to meet costs partly from her own funds and partly through donations made by MacDonald from the Times fund. She and MacDonald evolved a close working relationship, and the fund became a powerful weapon against official incompetence. As a result the newspaper was subjected to a campaign of vilification from elements in the establishment, who either denied that things were as bad as reported or imputed base motives for the paper's involvement.

John MacGregor (1825 – 1892), nicknamed Rob Roy after a renowned relative, was a Scottish explorer, travel writer and philanthropist. He is generally credited with the development of the first sailing canoes and with popularising canoeing as a sport in Europe and the United States. He founded the British Royal Canoe Club (RCC) in 1866 becoming its first Captain. “I enclose my Carte [not present] representing me in my little yawl Rob Roy (not the canoe), in which I sailed 1500 miles, entirely alone; crossing the Channel twice, once by the long passage of 100 miles from Havre to England.”

Aberdeen, 25 August 1794. 2¼ pages, 9 x 7 inches, address panel, some paper repairs, light dust soiling. “I have published proposals for a treatise on Navigation, and another on Astronomy, at the end of a work by me upon the Longitude published last year, of which it is probably you may take a part. The Navigation will be about the same size as the treatise on the Longitude ...” Andrew Mackay (1760–1809), Scottish mathematician, known as a teacher of navigation. Mackay contributed to the theory of navigation, and was a calculator of mathematical tables. His works include The Theory and Practice of finding the Longitude at Sea or on Land: to which are added various Methods of Determining the Latitude of a Place by Variation of the Compass: with new Tables, published by subscription, 1793, 2 vols.; 2nd edit., with author's portrait, 1801; 3rd edit. 1810. HMS Crocodile at Cork, [Ireland] 4 June 1849. 6 x 8 inches, remains of guard. Donald Hugh Mackay (1780-1850) entered the Royal Naval Academy in January 1792, and embarked in 1794 as midshipman on the Daedalus. He was made Lieutenant in 1798 into the Ariadne, and accompanied Sir Home Popham on his mission to destroy the Bruges locks. After various appointments and actions, including the fall of the Helder fortress, Mackay served in various ships in the Channel fleet as Commander. From 1811 to 1816 he served on the East India station, in the Volage, the Malacca and the Minden. Part of the time he was under the command of Sir Samuel Hood, seeing arduous service in the Eastern Archipelago and the China seas. In HMS Malacca he co-operated with a squadron under Sir George Sayer in a serious attack made in June 1813 on the pirate settlement of Sambas in the island of Borneo. HMS Crocodile was a 28-gun sixth rate launched in 1825. She was on harbour service from 1850 and was sold in 1861.

Florence, November 1880. Postal Card 3 x 5 inches, in good condition. Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie (1847–1935), composer, violinist and conductor. In his day Mackenzie was regarded as the finest ever Scottish musician, and many of his programmatic works are based on Scottish subjects, but his music is cosmopolitan in style and somewhat old-fashioned for its period, displaying influences of French and German composers, including Bizet, Gounod, Schumann, and Wagner.[ODNB]

Tax Office, 12 April 1813. 1 page 10 x 8 inches, torn in three places at seal opening, some paper adhering where formerly mounted. Henry Mackenzie (1745-1831) wrote the influential novel ‘The Man of Feeling’ in 1771.

129 George Street, Edinburgh, 6 December [1842 in another hand]. 2¼ pages 7 x 4½ inches, fine. Sir Andrew Douglas Maclagan (1812–1900), physician and expert in forensic medicine and public health, and botanist, Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. Maclagan was also one of the earliest figures involved in Scottish photography who exhibited examples of photogenic drawing to the Edinburgh Society of Arts as early as March 1843.

Undated [1829]. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, minor blemishes and creases. Charles Maclaren (1782 –1866), Scottish journalist and geologist. He co-founded The Scotsman newspaper, was its editor for 27 years, edited the 6th Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. In 1822 Maclaren was the first person to successfully identify the correct position of the lost city of Troy, in his Dissertation on the Topography of the Plain of Troy.

Transport Office, 10 October 1801. 2 pp. 10 x 7 inches, in good condition. Alexander McLeay [or MacLeay] (1767 – 1848) was a leading member of the Linnean Society, a fellow of the Royal Society and member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. In 1795 he was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society of London, also serving as its Secretary, and was also appointed chief clerk in the prisoners of war office. When the office was linked with the Transport Board after war broke out, Macleay became head of the correspondence department. In1825, Macleay was appointed Colonial Secretary for New South Wales. He arrived in Sydney in January 1826, with his wife Eliza, 9 of his 10 surviving children, and his extensive collection. His extensive entomological collections formed the basis of the Macleay Museum at the University of Sydney.

26 Half Moon Street, 14 February 1834. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, one clean tear repaired, otherwise in good condition, with an integral blank leaf (verso dust soiled). Uncommon. William Macmichael (1783–1839), physician and medical biographer, remembered as the author of The Gold-Headed Cane (1827). Macmichael's A Journey from Moscow to Constantinople in the Years 1817, 1818 was published in 1819. In 1829 Macmichael was appointed physician extraordinary to King George IV, became librarian to the King in 1830, and became physician in ordinary to King William IV in 1831.
