Description:
Glasgow: William MacClellan, 1956. A long poem by MacDiarmid (pseudonym of Christopher Morray Grieve, 1892-1978), an important modernist poet and Scottish nationalist, was also a Communist who flirted a bit with Fascism. (One of his books was titled "Scottish Eccentrics" and Quercus speculates that perhaps MacDiarmid should have included himself.) This is a Near Fine copy of the Second Printing, from 1956. Green cloth binding with gilt lettering and a design on the front board. Illustrated beautifully by John Duncan Ferguson (1874-1961) with "decorations" based upon the Ogham script. 147 pages; absolutely clean text, fresh and bright, with only the tiniest hint of wear to the corners. The dustwrapper is also Near Fine, with minor wear to the edges. A beautiful copy of this scarce volume. In an archival plastic protector. Because of the subject, Quercus has catalogued this work in our "Irish Authors" catalog; apologies are offered and forgiveness requested. Size: 4to -… Read More

Description:
New York, London, Glasglow and Manchester: George Routledge & Sons, 1890. . This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of an undated edition (the First Edition was issued in 1877 by Lippincott.). Routledge has conveniently provided a list of MacDonald's works they publish, and the latest one shewn is "What's Mine is Mine" from 1886. Quercus therefore rather arbitrarily assigns this a publication date of 1890 and believes it to be an early American reprint (or possibly the First Edition Thus). It is an uncommon addition, with no holdings shown in WorldCat or Copac. Highly decorative Victorian binding; green cloth with the stampings filled with black, red, and gilt. The rear cover reproduces MacDonald's signature. Clean text; vii. 386 pages, with the ads a page in the front. Internally, there are some problems with the endpapers: both front and back FFEPs have wrinkles and the second FFEP has been torn in half. But the binding is beautiful, with only mild rubbing along the margins. There… Read More

Description:
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1881. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish anti-Calvinist minister, a poet, and a pioneer in modern fantasy literature. His importance as an influence on Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and others, cannot be overstated. "MacDonald was acquainted with most of the literary luminaries of the day; a surviving group photograph shows him with Tennyson, Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Trollope, Ruskin, Lewes, and Thackeray. While in America he was a friend of Longfellow and Walt Whitman" (Wikipedia). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition, in an attractive Victorian decorative binding. Not common today. Brown cloth, rules in black, with a flower design on the front cover in green and gilt. Lettering on the spine and cover also gilt. Clean text; 467 pages. Description:
New York, Boston, Montreal: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., 1868. Irish patriot John Mitchel (1815-1875), after his escape from Tasmania to America, continued the 18th-century history of Ireland by the Abbe James MacGeoghegan. This copy is complete in one volume, an interesting variant by the publisher, and much less common than the illustrated 2-volume editions Sadlier published. A Very Good (Minus) copy, with the brown leather binding somewhat scuffed and chipped, and the edges dusty. The first signature is weak but holding, with the cords showing. The precedence of the various Sadlier editions is somewhat unclear, particularly since some were undated. This is the first version issued without mention of the Irish Brigades or of the original translator. Despite its popularity in the 19th Century, good copies are are scarce. No dustjacket, as issued.
