Stirling: Printed by W. Macnie, 1826. Removed from a bound volume with inner edges worn, a relatively weak impression of the woodcut, but otherwise a nice copy. Very good.. A charming provincial chapbook from local Stirling chapbook printer William Macnie. A short collection of ballads. With what appears to be a recycled or otherwise irrelevant woodcut featuring the letter "D". Macnie apparently produced around 110 chapbooks under his own imprint during his ownership of the firm previously owned by the Randalls. 12mo. 8pp. Atkinson, Street Literature of the Long Nineteenth Century: Producers, Sellers, Consumers, pg. 170; SBTI.

Very good in 19th century half leather with worn boards, a few dog-eared pages, one plate reinforced, one with a small tear, some pages browning at edges, but overall a clean copy.. This work was "a comprehensive and sensational exposure of the Shakespeare forgeries by William Henry Ireland" (DNB) who purportedly discovered a treasure trove of documents by Shakespeare including the unknown play Vortigern and Rowena. The instant work was published a few days prior to the first performance of Vortigern, which was interrupted and heckled throughout by the "Malone faction", which in part led it to be the only performance - until the Pembroke Players revived it for one night in 2008. Messina, 1834. Very good with wear to edges and spine, and a tear to one leaf not affecting contents. A lovely manuscript in an equally lovely binding.. An unpublished manuscript English translation of Sicilian poet Giovanni Meli's La Fata Galanti (The Courteous Fairy, 1762). Meli (1740-1815) was a physician and poet who wrote in his native dialect of Palermo and promoted and collected Sicilian literature. The Courteous Fairy, a satirical poem in eight cantos, is one of his earliest works, written at the age of 22, four years before his first published collection. Although much of Meli's work has been translated into English and published, La Fata Galanti has only been translated in print in English recently. This particular translation remains unpublished. Commemorating the passing of the Archbishop of Perga / Coadjutor Bishop of Bordeaux, by Mermillod, the Cardinal Bishop of Lausanne and Geneva. Rare. 8vo. Unbound sheets. 93pp., [1] + tissued-guarded engraved frontispiece. OCLC reflects one physical copy in the United States, and none appear to be the instant vellum issue.

Dublin: Printed for P. Wogan [et al.], 1791. Very good in contemporary gilt-tooled calf, red morocco lettering-piece, all edges green, extremities worn, surface loss to upper board, chipping to spine, joints split, and occasional spotting/creasing.. Third edition, being the first Dublin edition. This work was the spiritual successor to her arguably first work of prose, Thoughts on the Importance of the Manners of the Great to General Society (1788). Ever the reformer, in the instant work she, as journalist Richard Davey later wrote, "deplores the general laxity of morals that pervaded every class of English Society" but in particular, the upper classes. In sending a copy to an acquaintance in New York, William Cowper wrote that his acquaintance's, or Americans', manners "may be more pure than ours, yet it is unlikely that even among you may be found some to whom her strictures are applicable." 12mo. Very good in publisher's maroon buckram with paper label, unopened, minor chipping of the label, lightly faded boards, foxing to front flyleaf, contemporary ownership signature and plate, and dust to edges, but still a nice copy.. First Edition. Large paper issue which is number 257 of 275 on hand-made paper. None of Scott, Walsdorf, or Buxton Forman indicate whether the large copy or trade take precedence, but nevertheless, the large paper issue is more desirable. Buxton Forman states "[t]his remarkable work of true collaboration, in which both Morris and Mr. Bax went over every sentence, was now dug out of The Commonweal, revised, and printed . . ." Sm 4to. With the ownership signature of Alfred Baldwin, notably the father of PM Stanley Baldwin, and on occasion in written correspondence with Morris. More notable as the brother-in-law of Georgiana Burne-Jones. His wife, Louisa, along with Jane Morris, and her sisters Agnes and Georgiana are thought to be the inspiration for figures of Burne-Jones' 1864 painting "Green Summer." The Church of All Saints, Wilden, which Baldwin paid for construction were replaced with 14 designs by Burne-Jones, and which are dedicated to their respective families. About very good in publisher's dark red cloth with bumping and wear to edges and spine, paper spine label present but with loss, spine lean, front hinge starting, but nevertheless a desirable copy with excellent association.. Inscribed presentation copy from Morris to Ford Madox Brown, dated December 1888. An exceptional Pre-Raphaelite association. Brown was a British painter closely aligned with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an "old and intimate" friend of Morris, and a founding partner of Morris's design company, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. This copy was also owned by, and has the bookplate and ownership inscription of, American painter and collector Hamilton Easter Field who appears to have acquired it in 1894, the year after Brown's death. 8vo.
