xi+143 pages with tables, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. First edition. The Spanish began to settle New Mexico in the sixteenth century, and although scholars have long known the names of those settlers, this is the first book to place the colonists on the map. Using documentary, genealogical, and archaeological sources, Elinore M. Barrett depicts the settlement patterns of Spaniards in New Mexico from the beginning of colonization in 1598 up to 1680, when the Pueblo Revolt forced the colonists to retreat for a time. Barrett describes the natural environment and the Pueblo villages that the Spanish colonists encountered, as well as the activities of the Spanish civil and religious establishments related to land, labor, and tribute and the mission and mining landscapes the colonists created. She also recounts the founding and settling of Santa Fe and analyzes demographic dynamics, adding a new dimension… Read More

Description:
vii+194 pages with tables, notes on sources and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's grey cloth with silver lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Dr. Gene Brack s first book is derived from his doctoral dissertation at the University of Texas. He is currently Associate Professor of History at New Mexico State University. The book is based largely upon intensive research in such sources as Mexican newspapers and contemporary pamphlets printed in the period from the independence of Mexico to the outbreak of the war with the United States. The author believes that Mexican newspapers are the single most important source of information concerning Mexican attitudes (p. 185) toward the United States. Whereas newspapers may be commonly recognized as a source for historical research, they must be used with extreme care as any modern reader of them today will agree for they always tend to stress the sensational and advance particular viewpoints, while… Read More

327-351 pages with cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. current Anthropology Volume 38 Number 3 complete issue. First edition. A coherent account of emotional change must find a dynamic, a vector of alteration, outside the discursive structures and normative practices that have monopolized ethnographic attention in research on affect. But this dynamic can be found in the very character of emotional expression. Emotion talk and emotional gestures are not well characterized by the notion of "discourse" derived from the poststructuralist theories of Foucault or by that of "practice" derived from the theoretical writings of Bourdieu, Giddens, and others. These concepts do not capture the two‐way character of emotional utterances and acts, their unique capacity to alter what they "refer" to or what they "represent"–‐a capacity which makes them neither "constative" nor "performative" utterances but a third type of communicative utterance entirely,… Read More

Theo Daniël Van Scheltinga, representing The Netherlands, was clear fourth just half point behind. 137-186 pages with figures, charts and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 33, Number 2 complete issue. First edition. "basic color terms" are the simplest forms of broadest meaning that most speakers of a language will routinely apply to colors in any context. They number from 2 to i i in languages throughout he world. Yet in language after language speakers choose the same colors as the best examples or foci of basic color terms; the favored colors comprise less than 30% of the total assortment contemplated during interviews. This suggests that foci are constrained by universal visual physiology. Further, the meanings of the basic color terms of a language are predictable from their number, implying that everywhere they evolve in a highly restricted order. It appears that basic color-term evolution also is constrained by neurology. Condition: Light edge wear, corners bumped else very good.

Description:
x+263 pages illustrated by Paul Kennedy. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's quarter beige cloth with gilt lettering to spine over green cloth in original pictorial jacket. A glorious part of Ireland, the enchanted land of myth and magic, is captured in these twenty-two stories, planned by the "last of the true Irish shanachies" as his final and definitive collection. Here are stories of the days when heroes trod the earth. There are giants to be outsmarted, witches to be scorned, hazardous journeys to make and impossible feats to accomplish. There are bargains to be made and promises to be kept, and always it is a bold and daring youth, perhaps with the help of a dazzling young damsel, who conquers all. Here you meet kings and queens (witty and witless), wizards and hags, enchanted animals and the "little people" of Ireland. These tales -- newly revised and rewritten by Seumas McManus shortly before his death in 1960 -- represent what he described as the "cream of my story-lore."… Read More
