Heavily worn with chipping and loss to the margin, not touching text except for the top line of the publisher's advertisements; foxed and spotted; contemporary music seller stamp--"John C. Schreiner & Sons / Jewelry & Music. / Macon, GA." at the bottom of the cover; later owner stamp on the same leaf. Parrish & Willingham 7588.

New York: Neale Publishing Company, 1916. Hard Cover. Good binding. Octavo. 410 pp., frontis, maps, plates. First edition. As issued, in orange cloth; all plates are present as called for. Spine is darkened; a significant snag and resulting closed tears to the cloth has been suitably mended; covers are a trifle soiled; contents are largely clean; hinges starting, but holding. Gift inscription from a Greenbrier manager to Granville Valentine; and later an inscription by Valentine gifting this book to "Wilton"; Wilton's bookplate on the front pastedown. Valentine was a member of a prominent Virginia family. Krick calls this a "well written" book and notes that the author "deals primarily with the history of the place from the 18th Century to its resurgence after the Civil War. A chapter on the Battle of Dry Creek, August 27-28, 1864, will interest students of the war, as will a description of the successful effort to thwart David Hunter's eager torch" Neale Books 297.

Good binding. 12mo. 12 pp. Removed from a binding and lacking original printed wrappers, recently sewn through the notches to keep bifolium together. Ink drop stain to the outer margin of the fore-edge, not affecting any text, otherwise contents are clean. A brief sketch of the Virginia Senator. Haynes 11092.

Signed and inscribed by MacLeish on the front free endpaper. In publisher's cloth binding with titled in silver on the spine with author's initials boldly blocked in silver on the front cover. Binding is a bit sunned at the board edges; contents are clean; dust jacket is worn with early tape repairs in several place on the back; spine sunned; price intact on the front flap; despite the wear, it presents fairly well in a mylar cover. A nice collection of early poetry by the decorated poet, winner of multiple Pulitzer's in poetry and drama as well as the National Book Award.

A very nice copy with only light spotting to the front wrapper. Top corner of textblock at the fore-edge is bumped with some very minor chipping to several leaves, nowhere near the text. A remarkably nice copy this Confederate imprint. In in MacMahon navigates a well-trod path purporting to establish "that slavery was originally a universal institution of all great governments and societies" and the general degradation of those peoples who would ultimately be enslaved under the American system. Further, he argues that "[t]he North was the first and original secessionist; she rent asunder the old Union , and trampled under foot the Constitution. . . ." Uncommon in this condition. Residue from binding on the spine; light pencil note on the title page; light toning throughout, but largely a clean copy. Printed here is Madison's letter and laws imposing taxes on the lands of non-residents, including "An act levying a territorial tax on land"; "An act to regulate county levies"; "An act supplementary to an act entitled 'An act laying a territorial tax on land,' and providing for a territorial tax for the year 1801"; and also "A law supplemental to a law to regulate county levies, adopted from the Pennsylania code, and published at St. Vicennes the 19th January, 1801, by William Henry Harrison, governor, William Clarke, Henry Vanderburg, and John Griffin, judges in and over said territory." Spine a trifle sunned; contents heavily toned throughout; small chip to the fore-edge margin of the title page. From the library of John Stewart Bryan publisher of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and president of the American Newspaper Publishers Association. Originally issued in English in 1918, Scott's work has been translated into French here in what one would imagine is the first French language edition. Uncommon.

London: The Fortune Press, 1951. Hard Cover. Very Good binding/Very Good dust jacket. 12mo. [2], 54 pp. First edition. As issued in cloth backed boards in a cream dust jacket. Fore-edge lightly foxed, else a clean, bright copy. Quite an uncommon collection of poetry pseudonymously authored by Magee, a significant literary figure in Ireland.

As issued, in brown cloth with abbreviated title stamped in gold on the front cover and in blind on the rear cover. Light wear, only. A remarkably nice copy; contents clean. Mahan was a noted American military engineer and West Point instructor whose influence is evident on the nature of warfare during the Civil War. This present work was originally issued in 1847, and was reprinted in the South when the publisher refused to sell copies to the Confederacy. It was expanded by Mahan in 1862 and is a significant work of military tactics and strategies. ANB; Parrish & Willingham 4942.

A fresh copy with little in the way of shelfwear; top edges of the boards are a bit sunned; front board is a little splayed; moderate to heavy foxing to the fore-edge; jacket is crisp if a bit sunned at the spine; ghost of residue on the reverse of the jacket at the spine, not visible from the outside of the jacket. A very nice review copy with several pieces of promotional material including a photograph that was used for the back panel of the jacket. This copy retains the original leaf with printing error and has the missing words written in (ink smeared on the last word)--Ahearn in his price guide calls this the "second state."
