There is a further autograph note, initialled by the author, and dated 1939. Possibly an author's copy, though not, we think, one of the two copies mentioned in spectrum as the description doesn't quite match. Translated from the German by Max Schachtman. An interplanetary work visiting such notable planets as Saturn, mainstay Mars and a mysterious further planet. It's a nice book, condition-wise and presentation-wise. Mader was a German science fiction writer, and the present title was first published in 1911 in German - it was the first book he had translated into English. The publishers are certainly pushing him as a new Jules Verne but according to the SFE, we're looking at more of a Haggard. A couple of short tears to the jacket and spine tips, a little dustiness to the top edge, and one short tear to the rear fold that just got about 10mm longer when I examined it. London: R. Wilks. London, R. Wilks, 1816. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. Three volumes, complete. An important entry in the Arthurian canon. I guess it's technically the eighth edition given the six editions between Caxton's 1485 issue and the 1634 edition published by Jacob Bloome. Then boom, like a stagecoach two centuries later, two turn up at once (actually three if you include Southey's of 1817). The Walker and Edwards edition of 1816 seems to have been published prior to this Wilks edition, though the text seems to have been prepared in 1815 given the preface. Of the three, it appears the Wilks issue sold the poorest, perhaps given the editing of all the fruity language. This appears to be an flyer for the first issue of Answers' Library, advertising Richard Marsh's The House of the Dead. I can find no references to either the magazine or story, so my assumption is that the magazine didn't get very far. The reverse states that Answers' Library is a spin-off of Answers' which had been running for 21 years at that point.
