English and French on opposite pages. 283 pages, 8 leaves of plates : illustrations ; 24 cm. Cream colored wraps, uncut fore-edge. with a highly decorative pressed cloth slip-on chemise featuring an elaborate floral pattern of Morning Glories in gilt, red and green, all backed in pale blue silk. Book Condition: Very good at least, with minor wear to wraps only. Binding very sound and interior immaculate and unmarred. Luxurious cream colored pages completely lacking any hint of foxing or soiling of any kind. Eight plates collated and perfect (some lacking tissue guards to no effect). Chemise is good only with spine lacking pressed cloth surface altogether and chipping with loss in other spots though blue silk backing is entirely intact and providing stalwart structural integrity to the whole enterprise. A nice association inscribed by author to Martin Gutzwiller, the famed physicist responsible for the Gutzwiller wavefunction among other things. Gutzwiller was a well known book collector whose collection was sold at auction in 2014. A lavish production of sound scholarship and bookcraft. [Not to be confused with the 1983 Abbeville reprint].

Included are the original designs, costumes, decors, sets, and sketches for the various dancers, magicians, monsters, and peasants. Original lithograph frontispiece created for this book (Mourlot 581) is bright and unmarked, without the wavyness that sometimes plagues this title.

The entire front page is taken up with a very detailed and very clear description of what each side is doing when one side is laying seige to another; "Explanation of Siege Operations" which serves to prepare to reader for reporting on the current war in Crimea where the Russians are laying siege to the English and the French (if it's not the other way around). The paper, a broadsheet, has been folded twice with area's along the folds suffering, though never such that the text can't be parsed.

Print #2 shows intermittent foxing, strongest in the blank, uncolored fields of the image; the deep inky color palette has lost none of its jewel-like intensity however; both prints are scarce to the trade and gorgeous as all get-out.
