Mild wear to calf, though internally near fine. Tight, superb "Edition Variorum" with index by Charles Louandre in handsome custom binding. Jean de la Bruyere (1645-96) was a French philosopher and moralist best remembered for this 1688 thinly-veiled "fiction," often expanded in later editions. From the library of Wisconsin civic leader JAMES M. LYNCH, chief clerk at the Adjutant General's Office during the Civil War, appointed quartermaster general in 1865; half-title page bears a light pencilled gift inscription to "J.M. Lynch from his / friend / J.J.L. / 1872." A lovely copy.

First edition -- tight, handsome -- of this gathering of comments in honor of the Wisconsin senator (1855-1925), ranging from a poem by Edgar Lee Masters and mini-bio of sculptor Jo Davidson to speeches by politicos such as Wisconsin senator John J. Blaine.

This Wisconsin attorney of the notable La Follette dynasty served three terms as that state's governor (1931-33, 1935-39), first as Republican and then with the Wisconsin Progressive Party he and his U.S. Senator brother Robert formed. Signed pamphlet, "Reorganization of the Supreme Court: Radio Address by Governor Philip F. La Follette of Wisconsin February 27, 1937," small 4to, wrappers, 11pp. Very good. Light single vertical fold. Published by the United States Government Printing Office (Washington, DC, 1937), La Follette here supports President Roosevelt's wildly unpopular "Judicial Procedures Reform Bill" or "court-packing plan" of 1937, legislation that would have allowed him to enlarge the court in such a way that would help push through his New Deal initiatives. First of this modern reprint edition, being a facsimile of an unidentified early printing of the noted 17th century translation. Tight and handsome. Interestingly, though not so noted, this copy came from the collection of noted Midwest children's book etcher and author Art Geisert, who used it in researching the edition of Aesop's fables he illustrated -- Barbara Bader's 1991 "Aesop & Company" (Houghton Mifflin).

American pianist and composer ("To a Messenger," "I Came with a Song," "Like a Rosebud") who studied under Leschetizsky in Vienna; he toured as accompanist with Marcella Sembrich and Frances Alda and was much sought after as a voice teacher for the likes of Marian Anderson and Lawrence Tibbett. The most colorful of New York's many colorful mayors was its airport-namesake 99th, a vocal Republican reformer who served in Congress (1917-19, 1923-33) and three terms as mayor (1934-45). Thick, bold signature in black ink near the bottom of a heavy stock buff 5½" X 3¼" postal card, New York, NY, cancelled on verso 12 June 1934. Near fine. At the bottom of a typed autograph request ("This is my fifth attempt so please") from future noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), "The Little Flower" signs. Accompanied by a delightful and fine glossy 6½" X 8½" black and white news agency photograph, a half-length portrait of a seated La Guardia in suite and tie, right hand cupped to mouth as he bellows. Writing from this Paris suburb (Rueil-Malmaison) west of Paris that now has a street named in his honor (Rue Eugene Labiche), the playwright arranges a one-hour appointment for the following Monday. This diplomat from a distinguished family of jurists and diplomats served as the French Ambassador to the U.S. from 1933 to 1937. Bold and handsome "With Warm regards" and signature in black ink on a 6" X 7" sheet with "Ambassade de France / Washington, D.C." imprinted in blue at top. Very good. Faint single horizontal fold. A lovely example from mid-1930s vintage.
