Description:
United States. Good with no dust jacket. 1901. Ephemera. On offer is an excellent example of a written application for an advertised job, dating to the beginning of the 20th century. The letter was written by a Mr. H. L Howland in response to a job advertised in a local newspaper. In his letter, he extols his virtues and how he would be able to fill the position offered. The position is not named but context suggests that it is a machine operator. Also included is the envelope in which the letter was sent. His letter is interesting from a couple of perspectives. First, he writes it on his employer's letterhead. His employer, D. J. Young, is a wholesale agent for Anheuser Busch and their logo features prominently on each page. Secondly, he offers that he is dissatisfied with his employer but does not go into specifics. The Anheuser Busch logo is very prominent on each page of the letter. Anheuser Busch began in 1852 as the Bavarian Brewery in St Louis MO. In 1860, it was purchased by… Read More

Description:
BEDFORD BEDFORDSHIRE ENGLAND GREAT BRITAIN. Good. 1887. On offer is an incredible, intimate look into the life and times of The Tudor Family of Bedford, Befordshire, England. Though she always refers to herself as "self" there are numerous other references to identify the author of this detailed day by day account as Mrs. N. L. Tudor, wife of E.T. Tudor [research suggests they have a role in St. Paul's Cathedral], mother to Mervyn, Gwen and Howell and that they are family from a large family of vicars, priests, deacons and reverends. A casual reading notes priest-relatives in New Zealand and one very interesting entry is regarding a relative, Hugh Aldersly Tudor, as returning from the Medicine Hat Diocese of the Canadian North West Territories. A later note refers to a daughter born to the Canadian branch of Tudor's in Ottawa. Handwritten the journal dates from 1887-1890 and is an account of life at Bedford as it began for the Tudors who arrived at Bedford from Burnham,… Read More

Description:
10th Dragoons Regiment. Poor with no dust jacket. 1875. Ephemera. On offer are two interesting pieces of correspondence from the commanding officer of a 200 year old French cavalry regiment. The letters were both written in 1875 by Colonel Labrousse, the commanding officer of the 10th Dragoons Regiment. From our research, Labrosse was Louis II de Labrousse, a cavalry officer and an officer of the Legion of Honour. Born in 1825, he passed away unmarried in Nantes, in 1892. His father and uncles had served in the bodyguard of Louis XVI and as such, their properties were forfeited in the French Revolution. Members of the family were guillotined during the Revolution. His father served under Napoleon and after the Restoration, their lands were restored to them. He entered the army and served in cavalry regiments like his father, rising to become Colonel of this regiment. The 10th Dragoons were part of the French 4th Infantry Division in the Franco-Prussian War. In 1870, the Regiment took part… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1789. Four very warm letters from patients obviously post-operative all declaring the utmost respect and thanks to Professor Chopart. One letter is clearly signed Lalouette and the first of March 1789. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world," he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100,000 books and at least 60,000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases, Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars, driven to distraction, would spend… Read More
