Karl Ludwig Lehrs (1802-1878) was a professor of ancient Greek philology at Königsburg University.

Jules Lemaitre (1853-1914) was a professor at the University of Grenoble, a drama critic for the "Journal des Débats" and a critic for the "Revue des Deux Mondes." Lemaitre was admitted to the French Academy in 1896. His "La Comedie après Moliere et le theatre de Dancourt" was first published in 1882.

A small tear on front wrap near the hinge is carefully sealed. Crease on bottom corner of the last few leaves. This volume covers the history of alchemy in late antiquity including the Greek and Graeco-Egyptian alchemical texts which appeared under the names of Hermes, Democritus, Zosimus etc. Lippmann published a 2nd volume of alchemical history in 1931 and a 3rd volume in 1954 (neither are present here). Title page contains the Plantin device. Bound in a fine unsigned modern full calf binding with blind stamped and gilt boards and an extra-gilt spine. Interior pages are clean and fresh with an occasional spot. Edges are trimmed a bit closely on some leaves. A very attractive copy. The engravings, which mostly depict different forms of crucifixion, are ascribed to the Dutch engraver Peter van der Borcht. Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was a Belgian antiquarian who specialized in the study of ancient and classical history. His work "De cruce libri tres" (first printed in 1583) is an important scholarly study on crucifixion in antiquity. [Bibliographie Lipsienne I, pp. 189-190; Adams L-778].

Text is in Roman type with decorative woodcut initials. The title page contains a woodcut architectural border which surrounds Ascensius’s printer’s device depicting workers at a printing press. Some scholarly Latin marginalia is present, written in a careful early hand; signatures a-c, and signature p hold the heaviest annotations – including side glosses, micro notations between lines of text, and careful underlining of words and passages. His "Historia" is an account of the Polish Reformation, especially the Polish Socinians or Minor Reformed Church (Polish Brethren) from it’s origins in the 16th century up till the expulsion of the Brethren from Rakow (1638). Material is also included about events in outlying areas such as Prussia, Lithuania, Transylvania and the Ukraine. Lubieniczki died leaving his work incomplete.
