Description:
[Women] Bird, Isabella L A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains. New York: Putnam's. 1894. Later edition. Brown cloth with gilt illustration. 20 cm. Plates. 296 pp. Two library stickers on front endpaper and front free endpaper. No spine markings. Light foxing. Very good. Isabella Bird began travelling while in her early twenties to help alleviate illness. She was a single woman in her early forties when she made her trek through the Rocky Mountains. A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains details this fascinating account of her travels through a series of letters written to her sister, Henrietta. These letters are filled with beautiful, vivid descriptions of the scenery, the people she encountered, the way of life, and a mountain man named Jim Nugent, that was as rough as they come, but a complete gentleman with Ms. Bird. She has the distinction of being the first woman to become a member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1892.

Description:
[California] S. Lang? Autograph letter, signed. San Francisco, California. June 16, 1852. To his wife. One sheet folded into four leaves. Some 450 words, around 350 on the voyage.
Describes his trip across Panama, including being thrown off his mule, to the amusement of the natives. Also a woman who was a passenger had her two infants being carried by Indian women and they were separated during a torrential downpour. When they had not come to Panama City by nine p.m. they went searching for them and found them at 4 a.m., some 10 miles away "asleep on the bodies of their natives." They stopped to load coal in Acapulco. The passage took 25 days, but he arrived in good health, because until they were within three day of arrival "one might imagine him left on the Hudson Bay River so very smooth was the sea." Nice, if relatively brief, first-hand account of an 1854 steamship voyage to San Francisco.

[Women] [Suffrage] Vote on the Woman Suffrage Ballot First
and be sure you vote Yes. [Fargo, North Dakota?] N. D. Votes for Women League. [Circa 1914] Small broadside. 15 x 22.5 cm. Near fine.
OCLC shows no holdings for this item, although the papers of the N. D. Votes for Women league are at North Dakota State Univ. Suffragists were unable to secure the right of women to vote in North Dakota in several early efforts. They continued to hold conventions, raise awareness, and form organizations. From 1901 to 1911, every session of the state legislature submitted a women's suffrage bill for consideration. The arrival of Sylvia Pankhurst a noted English suffragist, who visited Fargo, N.D. in February of 1912 stimulated the creation of more groups, including the statewide Votes for Women League. In 1914, there was a voter referendum on women's suffrage. The wording of the state constitution meant that the bill would pass only if the majority of the votes cast at that election were "yes" votes. Ballots… Read More

Description:
[Civil War] Bill of Lading. [New York?]: [Cromwell's New-York & New Orleans Steamship Line] November 21, 1863. One sheet 16.5 x 29 cm partly printed document with manuscript inserts. Very good.
The Union forces in May 1863 captured the city of New Orleans. By this document $10,000 of United States Treasury Notes are being sent to the City, in all likelihood to purchase cotton or other goods from the captured port. See for example, the New York Times for September 1863 describing a shipment from New Orleans of cotton and accompanied by U.S. Treasury notes, since the Confederate Currency would no longer be valid, people would need to finance purchase and sales with U.S. financial instruments. Interestingly, in February 1863 Congress rejected a provision in the banking bill that would have made interest-bearing Treasury notes legal tender. An interesting look at the practical issues in carrying on commerce during the Civil War.
