This is No. IX of 20 copies printed on Antique Verge chamois paper and signed by Lagerlof, with an engraved portrait of the author signed by artist Axel Fridell. The total edition was 220 numbered copies. The first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Selma Lagerlof (1858-1940) assured her place in Swedish letters with this 1891 novel, which was inspsired by the legends, superstitions, and fairy tales of her native Varmland region. This novel also served as the basis for the 1924 silent film of the same name that launched Greta Garbo into stardom. Octavo, two volumes. In three-quarter blue morocco over marbled paper bindings by Isbergs (Norrkoping), with five raised bands and decorative gilt stamping. The original wrappers are bound in. Versatile in many media, including oil painting, watercolor, dyepoint copper etching, and engraving, Borg excelled as a painter of cowboy genre subjects and Indian ceremonials. Nice, France: Frank Lalou, 1998. First Edition. Fine. Frank Lalou (b.1958) is a writer, artist, and Hebrew calligrapher. All of his modern-day "illuminated manuscripts" are eminently collectible, but in these bilingual renditions of sacred texts Lalou has truly found his metier. His particular calligraphic style is suited to the aesthetics of both English and Hebrew letter forms. His design also incorporates invented shapes with appear alphabetic but in fact only mimic the abstract features of a true written script. The effect is at once modernist and timeless, hinting even at a pre-Babel language. This "one of book" is signed and dated by Lalou alongside his chop stamp. Quarto. Text in Hebrew and English. Five autograph letters signed by Lady Louisa Lamb (1849-1927) of Beauport, Sussex, to publisher William Tinsley concerning her little-known contributions to Tinsley's Magazine in the late 1870s. Lamb was the sister-in-law of another famous Victorian era woman writer: Mary Montgomerie Lamb (1843-1905), better known by the pen name Violet Fane, which she adopted in response to her aristocratic family's disapproval of her writing. Two of Lamb's letters from January 1878 are written on Beauport Battle letterhead, the ancestral home of her husband, Sir Archibald Lamb (1845-1921), 3rd Baronet. On January 10, she inquired with Tinsley about her article about Charles XII, operating under the assumption it would be published as the manuscript had not been returned. "Lady L regrets troubling Mssr. Tinsley with this note, but in her magazine work, she finds it much easier to get on with a clear understanding between editor and contributor." The death of President William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), who succumbed to illness just 31 days after his inauguration, was a shock to the nation, which had yet to have a Chief Executive die in office. However, as Howard H. Peckham observed in his article "Tears for Old Tippecanoe: Religious Interpretations of President Harrison's Death" (Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, April 1959), "it was a further shock because by many people this event, while it might be attributed directly to pneumonia bacteria, was actually an instance of Divine intervention. To astonishment, therefore, was added foreboding and dread. The Almighty had deliberately struck down the Chief Executive. Therefore He must have a purpose. What did it mean?
