Description:
London: George Allen & Unwin, 1967. 1st. hardback. Near fine, 1st edition, unclipped d/j (good, some bumping and creasing, in protetive sleeve); blue boards clean, gilt spine titling bright; text block firm, pages unmarked and crisp.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Therese la Chard was a Victorian cageling par excellence, the motherless child of a wealthy Anglo-German family living on the rural fringe of London, a home in which 'system' was the only ogre, involving obsessions with health and music which became a tyranny and caused her to revolt. Midway through youth came a sudden decline into biting poverty, with a lovely stepmother and a clamorous brood.

Portland, OR: Amadeus, 2000. 1st. h/b. Very good, 1st edition, unclipped d/j (library spine label), blue clothbound boards, silver spine titling; text block firm, pages crisp and bright; some neat underlinings or marginalia.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Jean Langlais (1907-1991) was among the foremost French musicians of his time. He was the successor to the musical tradition established by Cesar Franck and, like him, was organist at the church of Sainte Clotilde in Paris. Though blind from early childhood, he became one of the most celebrated touring virtuos of his time, his legendary recitals always concluding with an improvisation upon a submitted theme. Langlais wrote a body of music for organ second only in extent to that of Bach, and his compositions for organ remain widely played. This biography by one of his favorite pupils examines both his life and music.

Very good, 1st edition, unclipped d/j (vg), black boards, gilt spine titling bright; text block firm, pages crisp and unmarked, some foxing on edges.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). The Avro Shackleton was a formidable machine with its Griffon engines producing the characteristic grumble that gave the aircraft one of its nicknames, the Growler. This book contains stories from the men for whom the aircraft became a way of life. Combining memories and anecdotes from crew members with archive material (including rare and previously unseen photographs) Growling over the Oceans is an intimate and vivid introduction to the world of the Shack. In the last days of World War Two, the makers of the Lancaster bomber began to consider designing a new aircraft for Coastal Command. It eventually became the Shackleton. The men who flew and serviced the production version became fiercely proud of their aeroplane and its lack of home comforts. The Shackleton s ten man crews became a…

Pencil inscription on back fep.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist best known for his humorous Essays of Elia from which the essay 'A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig' is taken. Lamb enjoyed a rich social life and became part of a group of young writers that included William Hazlitt, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron and Samuel Taylor Coleridge with whom he shared a lifelong friendship. Lamb never achieved the same literary success as his friends but his influence on the English essay form cannot be underestimated and his book, Specimens of the English Dramatic Poets is remembered for popularising the work of Shakespeare's contemporaries.
