Description:
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1903. 36pp. 9¼ x 6 inches. Printed wrappers with some soil and browning; else very good. Sole edition. Predecessor to a landmark Antitrust decision. In 1902, President Roosevelt ordered Attorney General Philander C. Knox to challenge the merger between Northern Pacific Railway and Great Northern Railway companies. Roosevelt believed that the merger violated the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 and raised problems of restraint of trade, interstate commerce, monopolies, and fair competition. Here in 1903, and acting as defense attorney, John Larkin Thorndike (1844-1920) argued that Northern Securities Co., a holding company that owned shares in the competing railroads, never "used its power to suppress competition, or that it threatened or intended, or claimed the right, so to use it." (p36) Thorndike discusses the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887, the Michigan case of Richardson v. Buhl, People v. Sugar Refining Co. in New York, and State v. Standard Oil Co. in Ohio.… Read More

Paris: Chez E. Dentu, Libraire-Éditeur, 1859. First Edition. [3], [1]-162, [1 (errata)]pp., untrimmed. 8vo. Publisher's printed blue wraps. Pencil annotations, likely contemporary, throughout including mathematical and algebraic calculations. Wraps soiled, one separated; spine perished; sewing so loosened as to be almost disbound, else good. Still popular today in France, Italy, and Monaco-and within other casinos of Continental Europe-Trente et Quarante (Thirty and Forty), i.e., Rouge et Noir (Red and Black), is a French gambling card game that requires a special betting table. This rare gambling work, with only two known copies in America and one in France, is divided into two parts, nine chapters in all. In the first part, the author muses about the role of chance in revolutions and civilizations and refers to his own experiences in Egypt. The second part of almost 90 pages, the majority of the work, demonstrates the author's primary concern: successfully playing and gambling on the game of Trente… Read More

Trifle wear at the foot of each spine; corner portion of front free endpaper with expert tissue mend and light wrinkling. A clean and bright example and very good or better. Decatur, Illinois and Topeka, Kansas. Two Autograph Letters and One A.L. April 23, 1868-October 29, 1869. [12]pp. Quarto; 2 bifolium plus four printed stationery. Approx. 1200 words; legible. Very good; clean and legible. The three keys to real estate, or any business, success," Location, Location, Location", were as true in 1868 as today. This is the one piece of advice a brother offered to his younger sibling in correspondence. The advice had an interesting twist based on the older man's experience. The proper choice of location, which "must be a thriving place" had not only to do with the level of commercial activity at the location, but also with the amount of capital at one's disposal and brotherly "guidance." In three letters written during the space of 18 months from Decatur, Illinois and Topeka, Kansas, John Leidigh informed his younger brother, Jacob Leidigh, about the ups and downs of his lumber business, Shellabarger & Leidigh. During 1868, John wrote to Jacob from Decatur, Illinois, where… Read More
