Featuring an engraved portrait frontispiece of Charles Lamb. In a decorative maroon calf half binding, with gilt design to the spine, matching marbled sides and endpapers. Presentation label to pastedown, "To James Gray from a friend etc". Externally and internally sound, with only some light shelfwear to the spine and tips of half binding corners. Very Good Indeed.

Unlike many of her contemporaries in the late 20th Century, Le Guin's setting of worlds were not about other times or in deed worlds - but about the present reality. Our world. This novel won the Nebula for best novel and is about the Vietnam War. It introduces concepts such as "prisons" as no ones knows where it came from etc.
This is a nice copy of the British first edition. The book is square and the binding tight, with no inscriptions. Internally nice and clean. The faults are toning to the top and side edges; and remains of a mark to the half title page. The jacket is protected and the only fault is very slight edge wear to the top of the spine and it is price-clipped. It a nice copy of a desirable dystopia novel.

Eight books preceded this one, a Hackberry Holland novel. All of the books have an Appreciation, unique to this edition, and this book has mystery writer James W Hall. Copies of the book are in stock and sold as new.

Dennis Lehane's previous thrillers Mystic River (2001) and Shutter Island (2003) were best-sellers and much talked about books. The Given Day (2008) is an exploration of a rich cast of characters involved in stressed situations in Boston at the end of the First World War. It was a time of upheaval and calamity, and what Lehane does is take us inside his fictional world. The famous baseball player Babe Ruth features in this memorable story. Compared to E L Doctorow for its literary play with real historical figures it is Lehane's most mature novel. Lee Child does a brilliant job is setting out for us Dennis Lehane's journey as a writer in his appreciation for this edition. It is bound in leather with marbled paper over boards and coloured top edge. It is a heavy volume with 704 pp. Still a landmark book for Lehane.

This is one of the early Scorpion Press books issued in 1991. The author author, Peter Lovesey, had a successful career as a writer of Victorian and Edwardian whodunits. This book marks the transition to more modern crime; it does, however have an old-fashioned detective. Lovesey has since kept the Peter Diamond series going. This special Scorpion edition, signed by the author and being one of 99 copies, contains an introduction by Peter explaining his development as a writer. The book is new, and has not been read. The jacket is glassine.

Waxwork by Peter Lovesey. This British first edition first printing (dated 1978) has been rebound by the Scorpion Press in a run of twelve lettered copies. It contains a new introduction, signed by the author and was issued in 2020 with a photo of Detective Sergent Cribb (played by actor Alan Dobie) and is also signed by him. Waxwork was screened on British TV in 1980-81. Wawork is the last and darkest of the Cribb books set in Victorian times.The binding is real leather with five raised bands, gold titling and the scorpion logo at the base of the spine. The sides are marbled papers, designed in blue and gold with a blue top edge to the book block.
