Description:
Sheer brilliance in the use of a unique document to reconstruct in fascinating detail a previously totally unknown world, the mental, emotional, sexual life of late thirteenth-century peasants in a remote Pyrenean village. (Lawrence Stone, New York Review of Books.) A fascinating sociological study of medieval life. But it is also far more. It is a Chaucerian gallery of vivid medieval persons. (Hugh Trevor-Roper, Sunday Times.)

Description:
The name of "Apostolic Fathers" is so firmly established by usage that it will certainly never be abandoned; but it is not altogether a satisfactory title for the collection of writings to which it is given. It means that the writers in question may be supposed to have had personal knowledge of some of the Apostles, but not actually to have belonged to their number.

Description:
Typology is a Christian form of biblical interpretation which proceeds on the assumption that divinely intended anticipations of Christ appear in the laws, events and people of the Old Testament. The importance of typology in the study of seventeenth-century literature has long been accepted, yet students of Victorian culture have paid little attention to it. In this pioneering study George P. Landow demonstrates how biblical typology, an apparently arcane interpretative mode, had profound effects upon the secular culture of the Victorian age. (Publisher)

Description:
Lane's compendious and learned footnotes to The Arabian Nights together with other relevant material have been collected, edited and presented in coherent form. The purpose throughout is to explain the conditions of life and society as they were at the time when The Thousand and One Nights assumed their present form. Accordingly, a large proportion of these notes consists of extracts from the more famous Arabic historians and other authors of the later Middle Ages. To the records of these mediaeval writers Lane added the results of his personal experience of Arab society in Egypt and elsewhere towards the end of the last century. An accurate picture thus emerges, from this blending of record and experience, of the Muslim society which remained almost intact and unchanged until the opening of the twentieth century.

"A celebration of rhetoric and a challenge to all who consign consideration of style to the periphery of attention - Langham's book represents a good place to begin, both for the student of literature and for the student of religion who wishes to review Western history in the light of its rhetorical motifs." Description:
Marco Polo probably travelled more extensively than any man before him, and the record of his journeys is one of the world's most remarkable books. In 1271 he accompanied his father and uncle on their second visit to China, where he spent many years in the service of Kubilai Khan. He was sent to numerous imperial missions before being allowed to return home to Venice in 1295. In The Travels he described an area from the Polar Sea to Java and from Zanzibar to Japan, and in so doing revealed a world almost wholly unknown to western Christendom.

Description:
Despite the intensive research of the past quarter century, there still is no single book that examines all major aspects of the medieval scientific enterprise in depth. This illustrated volume is meant to fill that gap. In it sixteen leading scholars address themselves to topics central to their research, providing as full an account of medieval science as current knowledge permits.

Description:
Half of the papers in this volume were presented at a conference entitled Science and Technology in Medieval Society, held on November 12, 1983, which was organized by the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program at Barnard College and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. That meeting was the generative occasion for the present volume, which is not an exact record of its discourses, but a new collection of writings. The conference itself has a life of its own in the memories of those who attended, a tradition in the previous four conferences organized by the Medieval and Renaissance Studies program at Barnard, and a context of inspired undergraduate education and advanced research led by Professors Suzanne Wemple and Maristella Lorch.

Description:
The writings ascribed to the Athenian convert of St Paul, Denys (or Dionysius) the Areopagite, made their first appearance in the early sixth century. Since then, until the Renaissance and beyond, they have exercised an enormous influence on Christian thought, both in the East and in the West. Yet who their author really was remains an insoluble mystery. This book expounds the theological vision of these writings, a vision that draws both on the great Greek theologians of the fourth century - the Cappadocian Fathers - and on the stridently pagan philosophical tradition of late Athenian Neoplatonism, as well as showing affinities with the Christian thought of Syria, where "Denys" probably came from. His world is Christian, monastic, liturgical, with a lively sense of the celestial realm of the angels, and he expresses his understanding of its significance through a bold use of the categories of pagan philosophy. His theology combines a compelling vision of the beauty of God's world and his… Read more
