This scarce memoir follows the life of Pierre Toussaint (1766-1853), a Haitian-born New York hairdresser and philanthropist. The former slave was brought to New York City by his owners in 1787 and freed in 1807. In 1996, Toussaint was declared "venerable" by Pope John Paul II.

This work was reprinted from the scarce 1839 account of Zenas Leonard's firsthand description of the Joseph Reddeford Walker expedition to California.

Title in gilt on spines, five raised bands with gilt elephant motif in compartments. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Solid text blocks, light shelf wear. Faint foxing throughout text, mostly near edges. A near fine example. Frontispiece with tissue guard in Volume I, hundreds of illustrations throughout both volumes.
