Paris: L. Potier, 1862. A scarce and important auction catalogue. The Comte de la Bedoyere (1782-1861) was one of the most remarkable bibliophiles of 19th century France. By the age of 54 he had accumulated one of the great private collections in France, which he sold at auction in 1837. He couldn't bear to part with all of his books, so he bought many of them at his own auction (a practice authorities now frown upon), and had most of those rebound or otherwise "improved". During the ensuing years he also purchased about 2000 other important books. This "second" library was sold in 1862, a year after he had died. 2846 lots. 4to. attractively bound in somewhat later quarter morocco and cloth, original wraps bound in. Minimal, superficial wear to joints, internally bright and fine. Odell 1939, with a long citation, taken from the introduction to the catalogue, about La Bedoyere's painstaking manner of collecting, designed to guarantee that he had the best possible copy of a book.

Paris: Societe Normande du Livre Illustre, 1968. Beautifully illustrated with color lithographs by Michel King. Edition limited to 125 numbered copies printed on fine Rives wove paper. This copy has an excellent provenance: it was originally printed for bibliophile Emmanuel Le Pelletier, a member of the Societe Normande du Livre Illustre. It was later owned by Luis de Caralt, the Barcelona publisher who was Spain's leading collector of modern illustrated books (his bookplate). Folio. Loose as issued in original wraps. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects, in the original (lightly worn) cloth clamshell box.

Lyon: Cercle Lyonnais du Livre, 1949. The last book illustrated by Falke, who in fact died before it was published. With a suite of 14 original etchings printed on seven double folio sheets. In these etchings Falke achieves a spontaneity and economy of line reminiscent of the style of Matisse and Dunoyer de Segonzac. Edition limited to 150 numbered copies beautifully printed on fine, stiff handmade Montval wove paper, with the etchings printed on an equally fine but considerably softer paper made by the same manufacturer. This copy was originally printed for Dr. Fernand Lemaitre of the Cercle Lyonnais du Livre, and was later owned by Luis de Caralt, the Barcelona publisher who was Spain's leading collector of modern illustrated books.
