The collection of eight short stories written between 1948-1956. The work refers in form to the Three Dialogues between Hylas and Filonouse, the treatise of George Berkeley of 1713 - a lecture on the philosophy of subjective idealism. Lem borrowed the names of the interlocutors from the English bishop's treaty: Hylas and Filonous. The first of these names means "bodily", "material"; second: "mental", "intellectual".
