2 August 1867. 1 page 8 x 5 inches, in French, with a separate English translation. Charles de La Rounat (1818-1884), real name Aimé-Nicolas-Charles Rouvenat, was a 19th-century French writer, playwright, journalist and theatre director. A director of the Théâtre de l'Odéon from 1856 to 1867, then from 1880 to 1884, he authored several theatre plays and opéra comiques libretti, most of them in collaboration.

Great Yarmouth, 30 October 1888. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, fine. Uncommon. An early letter by Henry Herbert La Thangue RA (1859 –1929), English realist rural landscape painter associated with the Newlyn School.

H of C [House of Commons], June [watermark 1812]. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, a few light stains. John La Touche (1775 – 1820), Irish Whig politician. He was elected for Dublin City at the 1802 general election, defeating Tory MP the Right Honourable George Ogle. La Touche was defeated at the 1806 general election. At the 1807 general election, he was elected in an uncontested poll for County Leitrim, topping the poll at contested elections in 1812 and in 1818.

16 May 1864. In French. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, folds, in good condition, blind stamped initials beneath a coronet. Henry Godfrey Bernard Alphonse de La Tour d'Auvergne-Lauraguais (1823-1871), Pontifical Prince De L Tour d’Auvergne, diplomat, French ambassador in London (1863-69).

Undated. In French. 1 page 8 x 5 inches, in good condition. Paul Lacroix (1806 – 1884), French author and journalist. He was a prolific and varied writer, composing more than twenty historical romances as well as a variety of serious historical works, including histories of Napoleon III and of the Czar Nicholas I of Russia.

1 January 1823. In French. Théodore Lameth (1756-1854) served in the American war (1779-80), where he was wounded. He sat in the Legislative Assembly as deputy from the department of Jura, and became maréchal-de-camp

Paris, 15 September 1842,. In French. 1 page 8 x 5 inches, in good condition, with the integral address leaf neatly tipped on to part of an album page. Eugène Louis Lami (1800 –1890), French painter, watercolorist, lithographer, illustrator and designer. He was a painter of fashionable Paris during the period of the July Monarchy and the Second French Empire and also made history paintings and illustrations for books such as Gil Blas and Manon Lescaut.

August, 1811. 7 x 2 inches, lightly mounted. Isaac Landmann (1741-1826), professor of artillery and fortification.

17 July, no year given. 1 page 7 x 4½ inches, traces of mounting. Charles Landseer (1799-1879), historical painter, brother of Edwin Landseer. In 1851 he became Keeper of the Royal Academy.

The National Portrait Gallery has some 850 lithographs of his portraits and figure studies, done between 1825 and 1850. “... I never yet heard of an appeal of the sort made to a Hanger that was received with anything but a smile.- and I never made or conveyed one ...”
