American Book Company; Appleton. New York. 1884. 399 pages followed by 8 pages of advertisement for American Book Company Publications. 5 in x 7 3/4 in. The dark covers are in good shape with title in gold on front and on spine. There is some fraying along edges. The spine is frayed and worn, especially along edge with front board. The binding is loose, with the front hinge starting to detach. All pages are bound, although the textblock is loose in spots. The front end papers are creased and soiled, and the first few pages are soiled in spots. Otherwise, the interior pages are generally clear and bright; most have no makings or foxing. The back endpaper has some writing in pencil. The book contains 384 black and white figures, many of these are in very good condition and are interesting depictions of geological processes and ancient life.

The brown covers are moderately scuffed/soiled on front and back with moderate bumping/fraying on top and bottom of spine and corners. The author, title and publisher are stamped in bright gold on the spine. Library call numbers are visible near the bottom of the spine. The binding is solid, but the front and back boards are very loose and the gutter is visible when open in a few locations internally. Aside from library markings, the interior pages of this book are in good plus condition. Library markings include pastedown on the inside of the front board, a stamp on title page, and borrowing card/jacket pasted on the inside of the back board and rear end paper. Author and title in silver on spine. The dust jacket is just good; it is soiled along some edges and faded in spots but intact with no significant loss. It is in a clear Mylar protective cover. The interior is clean and bright with no writing or discoloration detected. The book contains several black and white photographs by Gyger, Klopfenstein and others.
